  • Help with swaying

    Is there a drill that I can practice to prevent me from swaying into my shots? I try to stay still and turn but my tendancy is to sway. I also seem to couple it with decelerating on shots inside 100 yards.

    I used to have quite a bad sway as well and couldnt fix it by only trying to rotate. There's a few things that I have done which has helped me a lot:

    1) Practice with a soccer ball between your knees and try hitting some shots. The ball shouldnt drop until after impact and this will give you the sensation of a passive lower body.

    2) At setup, point your knees out just a tad and swing like that.

    3) During the down swing, really feel like you are hitting against your left side (for right handed player)

      try swinging with your feet no more than 8-12 inches apart
      Dont let you weight move onto the outside of either foot
      On the backswing it stays on the inside of your back foot, starting the downswing it moves to the inside of the front foot...

        Having your front foot perpendicular to the target line (instead of diagonally angled) lessens the tendency to sway forward.

          Try this for your body turn to stop the sway. Clamp a golf club into the centre of your chest, so the club head is nearest to the ground. Take your posture. Make your turn. Rotate smoothly. When you complete the turn the club shaft should hang over your back foot.

            Try putting a golf ball or a lofted club under the outside of your right foot. This has helped me...

              a large majority of people sway because they loose their spine angle, keep your spine angle and you should sway no more

                Stand next to your kitchen table, or kitchen countertop - keeping your hips no more than an inch or two away. Now make your swing, and don't touch the table/counter. A great anti-sway drill.

                  If I feel like I'm swaying the first thing I focus on is trying to keep my lower body as still as possible on the way back. This is why the football between the legs is such a good drill, it prevents lateral movement of the left leg which minimizes the chances of swaying and will also increase your coil and therfore distance.

                    When you say lose spine angle, do you mean slouching?
                    I use to stuck my neck between my shoulders.

                      no, spine angle is the angle between your upper body and lower body at address

                        Decelaration of swing for shots within a 100?

                        Two things to consider, perhaps you know you have too much club or taken too bigger back swing. Thus, subconsciously slowing the swing down through the ball to allow for this.

                        Accellaration through the ball is a must. Choose a shorter club and be committed to the shot.

                        For the pitches and chips. Length of swing - same back and same forward. Have a nice smooth back swing and accellarate through.

                            everyones is tailored to their body type, set up, and swing preference. what ever YOUR angle is at address, you keep that.

                              Hi Pal
                              Swaying can be traced back to the start of the backswing. You should aim for a little latteral movement, just enough to take your weight onto the inside of your right foot. If your weight comes to far across on the backswing then you will sway on your downswing.

                              Try this drill
                              Place an umbrella or and old club shaft , upright , into the ground about an inch outside your right foot and tilt it slightly towards you. Now take your set up and begin your backswing. Try to barely touch the umbrella with your right hip as you swing the club back ,this will stop you from taking your weight too far across and thus stop you from swaying on the downswing.
                              incorporate this drill into your practise sessions and you will soon stop swaying.
