  • What makes a good golfer!

Aftford a member on this site said for me to make a thread which is about what I think makes a good golfer because me being not very popular on this site because i say what I think which gets me into trouble sometimes I thought I would make a thread and i would like to see your replys.

A good golfer is made from A/ A good mental attitude, always thinking positive always beleiving in yourself. B/ Having a good short game C/ Hard work, determination and being able to go through the bad spells you have in this game. D/ A good golfer is made from, acting like a pro, thinking like a pro, dressing like a pro and playing like a pro E/ Respecting other golfers so they will respect you! Which I not very good at

    Is that ok?

    1) Tempo
    2) Focus
    3) Flexibility - I know some might argue with that, but the best golfers make great shoulder turns
    4) Muscle Memory - being able to "remember" how to hit shots over and over and over and over and over

The reason you forgot to add anything about the swing is because you have thought about the reason you were asked to start this thread, and not gone "shooting from the hip" without thinking.

Respecting other golfers so they will respect you! Is the best part of the answer.

        My answer:

A typical good golfer is usually the quite guy at the club, who has a very strong inner believe that isn't always easy to see, not always the best swing, not always the best dressed but................most of all he's a gent who always has time for anyone any never criticises other golfer just because he is good.

          Dear Rick

I am pleased to hear that you are good at golf, that is the aspiration of all true golfers. Why do you think it's OK to have a rude attitude to others though?

Golf is a game that has high standards in the way we play the game, our honesty and the respect we show to others. Your current manner is probably affected by your age and will hopefully improve with maturity.

My advise to you is to work hard on improving this area of your personality then you will have the chance to become something special in the game "a great player and a gentleman". Look to people like Ernie Ells and Jack Nicklaus for inspiration.

          Best Regards
          Brian

            1) Keeps an honest score
            2) Maintains an awareness of others in the foresome - not jumping ahead of others, helping to look for balls, holding the flag, not stepping on somebodys line, reparing ball marks etc.
            3) Takes one shot at a time
            4) Does not let a few errant shots affect the total round or affect other players.
            5) Compliments others on good shots
            6) Analyzes the score card to evaluate for weaknesses
            7) Does not begrudgingly pay his debts at the end of the round, or graciously accepts winnings.

Just a few thoughts other can add to.

What makes a good golfer is someone who goe's out there to have fun, is polite and curtious to others and doesn't throw tantrams.
The score and swing is irrelevant

What makes a top player is practise and self belief.

                Well done rick.
i'm proud of you. You gave a lot of thought to your thread and at the same time left the door open for others to give a reply. I came from a very poor and aggressive background and golf as taught me humility and makes me aspire to be a better person in all aspects of my life.
I truly hope it does the same for you.

Like i said, everybody deserves a second chance.

Better to think what you say rather than say what you think!!!!!

                  Hi Aftford.

What a great thread.! To me a good golfer is one who doesnt talk or boast about what he can do, or what others should do. A good golfer is one who accepts his ability, plays to his ability, and accepts improvement as a result of what he puts into his game. We can all talk about instruction and other aspects of the game, but there is a danger of talking out of turn which isnt good for ones popularity. My motto is only give advice when asked for ones opinion. Worry about your own game because no one else will.

Re: What makes a good golfer!

A good golfer to me is the person who has taken the time to get decent instruction, understand his/her's golf swing, and what they can/can't achieve with that swing. This is a big part of the mental aspect of the game.

Another aspect of good golfer is the person who can keep their ego in check. This will help with not developing poor emotions such as losing one's temper, or otherwise disturbing other players around them.

The player that plays with in themselves, and just has fun, regardless of their handicap, will always make of fine golfer. This type player will always see their scores drop faster than other wannabes. GJS

Something I forgot to add to my previous post. I read this tid bit on another forum where the post basically read "you are not good enough to lose your temper". Makes alot of sense if you think about it. GJS

well describe what a good golfer will be just need to add a touch to be perfect within our skills...
we need a blindful touch of confidence!!!!
without confidence a pro became like we do at the golf course!!!
if not sure look at vijay,phil...and on
once they loose confidence, no good stroke after a bad shoot they look like me after a slice...lol

Re: What makes a good golfer!

                          Hi,
I started golf about 9 months ago and at some point I thought that a good golfer is a person that can play well. After that I realized that golf is a social game and thought that a good golfer is a person with whom is good to play.

Now I think that a good golfer is a genuine person. Some one who is what s/he is. We do not need to change to act to be good golfer. We just have to accept people as they are. (Golf is difficult as it is.)

We might grow to be better person through golf.

                          Just be what you are.

Re: What makes a good golfer!

I agree with the others in the sense that a good golfer is someone I WANT to play with. I've played with a lot of BETTER players (almost all are!) but the good golfers are the ones I learn from.

Being polite has so much to do with playing golf. It is the most remarkable element of the game especially in today's sporting world, where soccer players fake pain to gain free kicks, or take performance-enhancing drugs etc.

On a slightly different note but I think very pertinent to this thread...

Dave Pelz (who I think is great!) says golf is actually 5 games in one. And to be good a golf as-a-whole, you have to be good at all of them. He actually talks about various golfers from the point-of-view of what game they were best and worst at. He feels the reason why Jack Nicklaus was so good was his mastery of many of the games within golf especially the management game. The games according to Pelz are:

                            1) The power game: driving, full shots etc
                            2) Finesse game: short game, any non-full swing type accuracy shots
                            3) Putting game: enough said!
                            4) Mind game: ditto!
                            5) Management game: course management

Maybe that's why the best golfers aren't always the ones that can hit the farthest or putt the best. This is also the reason golf is so tough.

Re: What makes a good golfer!

There is so much I could respond to from all the comments above, and I enjoyed reading everyone . But I'll be a "Good Golfer" and keep my mouth shut on this one.

On second thought, may I ask a question ? Yesterday I was playing alone and for every green I came to a greens keeper drove up, hooked up the hose and began watering the green. 1st green he was there before me so I waited until he was finished. 2nd green he approached as I was on the green and began watering even as I was putting. 3rd green, I was on the green and as he approached I asked If he would wait until I finished putting. He began watering before I putted out. 4rth green when he approached (and by now I'm not believing this) I asked are you going to be at every green I play. He actually said yes. To which I responded, I think not. I payed to play golf here and I don't need you watering down the green at every hole when I'm trying to play golf. Obviously I was peeved at this point. He said "Sir, I have to water down the greens...." I said I understand but this is a bit much and quite a distraction. Well he waited until I putted out before turning on the water. And on the next green stopped well back and stayed in his cart until I was through. As I walked from the green I nodded at him and said "I appreciate that" he nodded back and stayed well behind me after that. What would you have done? I feel I handled it pretty well though I am sure I could have been more polite in my confrontation. I can be very assertive when I feel the situation calls for it and tend not to mince words. Let it be known that I have a lot of respect for the people who keep up the course. They are the ones who make or break the course as far as it's over all playability, but I feel sometimes they have not been trained well in how to not become a part of my game. It's bad enough on it's on, I don't need any help at playing any worse.
