  • All the sudden, hitting crazy distances...

with my irons. I used to hit a 5 , 165. All of the sudden, hitting it avg of 180. This is great, however, I am occasionally hitting some weird spikes like a 7i - 195, a 8i - 165.

I have changed a bit on my swing (but not changing swing to swing...been evolving my swing over time ) and I changed irons to Mac Gregor M565 with Rifle lite 5.5 TF.
These are forged heads. I used to play Cally Fusions with Rifle 5.5 TF shafts.

The only thing I have changed on my swing is I am using shorter back swing. Then, letting the club fall from the top, starting to power the swing from half down to half through. It feels like I am barely swinging but I am getting these crazy distances.

My question is: How do I manage these spikes to get some consistancy between clubs? Is this just a glimmer of things to come as a result of changing swings?? I was 160 out today and picked a 7 (where I would pick a 5 or 6 in the past) and hit it 190... 30 yards past the green. Could never do this before. With the new irons, been avg. 160ish with 7. Before, 145

Could the new rons be that much better? Why these spikes in distance?

i personally would get to the range and hit and hit and hit balls till you get some kind of consistency then note down your distances. thats just my 2cents

    hope this helps

You are obviously doing something wher the point of impact is a perfectly square club face and a good club head speed through the ball. Can you see any changes in your swing relevant to these points.? If you can, then keep it in your head and forget about the rest of your swing. Afterall, you are achieving the result we all desire.

I'm curious, did you get increased distances with the woods and driver as well?

          Hi,
This type of increase in club distance is normally caused by delofting the club face at address and contact, thus the loft of an 8 iron becomes a 7 or 6 and so on. The cause is either the ball is further back in your stance or the hands are further ahead of the ball. The result would be a lower flight trajectory where the ball does not stop as quick.

Your shorter back and through swing suggests a punch type shot which will lower the height and cause more roll.

          Regards
          Brian

What ball are you using? If it is some XL, switch to a soft cover. Then also make sure the lie on those ultra-long shots were not "flyers" (grass behind the ball)...this causes crazy distances because of less spin.

With the change in equipment, you will definatly get differences...so be prepared to adjust.

I am not trying to be negative, but I recently tried the new McGregor irons and this is my one complaint about them. They are built with a "wood" type philosophy. I noticed that every now and then, a few shots would just really "spike" off the charts. It would fly like a normal shot but just keep carrying.

Here is my reasoning for this.

              1) I know for a fact the set of clubs are all a few degrees strong, so this will naturally lead to more distance per club.

              2) I think these clubs are super when nailed in the direct center, and you get a little extra distance on top of the distance the "less loft" gets you. Then your normal, barely off-center hits go a little less far....which is closer to your normal distance you hit with your older "non-strong lofted clubs".

thereby, explaining your super distances sometimes.

....or you could just be really getting a good lag and pop on your swing from time to time....

Sorry I haven't been online for awhile....
THe lofts on these irons are similar to my Cally Fusions...except the PW..which is 45 vs. 46.

After a few more trips to the range and a few more rounds, I figured out that the swing I am trying to groove is producing the spikes and the irons are slightly longer than the fusions.

Got the fusions out and had some similar results, though the Macs are still a bit longer.

Problem is, I don't have the swing down enough to know how to do it consistently. Hope I figure it out.

Greg - Normal ball is Rev Tour (bought 20 boxes last year).

Woo - (Swearigen, cock$ucker...couldn't resist that -think Deadwood)
No, driver did not start blasting 350. Wish it did!!!!

Hope to get these swing changes down permanent as I am thrilled with the results. I will say this...I am starting to hit misses as thining shots where I used to hit fat. Is that any clue as to which direction my swing is going???
