Hello, I have been playing and enjoying this game for 2 years. I am currently a 15 handicap at my home course. I am 34 years old and by no means am I an expert at this game. I play because I have a high stress job and it relaxes me. For the last year I have really attempted to get a better swing on my full shots. They never have felt right or powerful, even though I usually get the ball there. My driver and approach shots were very inconsistant. Ex. fat, thin, right, left. It made me have to excel in my short game to keep it at bogey. For that I am grateful. But none the less I have recently started to hit my shots with power, feeling the ball compress, and straight as an arrow fairly consistent. I contribute this to something that I finally understand. WEIGHT SHIFT. I actually feel my upper body weight over my right hip/butt area on my takeaway. It feels effortless and natural. This has opened a whole new light on the game for me. I hope it is ok to post this here. My goal was to hopefully help someone, if only one, after all the great advice I have read over the past few months here. I would be happy to go into greater detail on how this new swing of mine feels if anybody is interested. Thanks

I would like to hear more about it. I have been struggling with my weight shift. When I swing at a tee, my weight shift is fine; however, once the golf ball is there - I am not sure what to focus on the weight shift or the ball?
I think my mistake was taking practice swings without a ball.
I went for a golf lesson today, and the instructor was pretty tight lipped. He said to focus on the flex of my rear leg - I am tall - and I have been flexing it too much, and concentrate on a high finish. Other than that, he would not offer any more information on anything. I think I see his point, if you flood the student with too much information, much of it will get lost.
If you have any drills, or inofrmation I would be much obliged!.

Re: Weight Shift after 2 Years
I focused on my right leg also. When taking my address, I kind of rock back and forth. Right to left. While I rock, I also feel looseness in my arms, I kind of waggle my arms to make sure that there is no tension in them. I'ts like after I setup square to my target line, my right leg is exceptionally stiff, although it is still flexed. Let me stress FLEXED. It's like it is flexed and fixed in one point in space. When I takeaway to the right, I feel pressure in my right hip/right side outer butt. I also feel the weight in my inside right foot heel. Like all my body weight is on my right heel. Yet my upper body is slightly to the right of my lower body and turned 90 deg. from the target line. At this point my right leg is in the same stiff/flexed position that is was in when I did my little rocking and waggle. To be really specific, imagine your right foot turning clockwise as you are looking down at it. Yet, it is not turning because of the spikes on your shoes or because your body weight is on it. That is the specific pressure that I feel in my right side at the completion of my takeaway. Hope this helps some.

1. if you are not shifting on the real swing I would look at ball placement, if it is too far back this will not allow you to shift through the shot
2. In order to shift the weight correctly, all you have to focus on is maintaining spine angle. when you maintain good spine angle you will automatically coil into the right side, which will also feel like a weight shift, and the coil from the right side will want to release on the downswing, which will also shift your weight to your left
try this, without a club cross your arms on your chiest and stand in a golf posture, now turn back while focusing on maintaing spine angle, notice how you feel like you need to unload?Last edited by shootin4par; 07-10-2006, 03:20 PM.
