  • Starting downswing before backswing is complete?

I have always found that when I start my downswing with my hips my shoulders seem to unwind with them at the same time which does not allow me to get the whipping motion that everyone talks about. By starting my downswing with the backswing not fully at the top I have found that the momentum my shoulders and arms create on the way back does not let them start straight back down again with my hips, thus creating that whipping motion. I have not yet hit any balls with this method but am eager to give it try. The only worry I have with it is that it means my backswing is only about half its usual length!

What do you guys think? Good idea or not?

usually this is something that is not thought about. If you are having a hard time doing this I would look to see if you are maintaining your spine angle in the back swing

Here's what I always tell people: think of the motion when you pound a nail -- or try it. You lift up the hammer, and just before it reaches the top, your arm already starts down. The hammer lags behind from that point on, until it catches up at impact on the nail head. Now do that with your whole body, that's your golf swing right there! Try pounding the nail without that lag and feel how robotic you are.

Doing what you are proposing is exactly what caused my hooks. My hands got ahead of the rest of me, I'd end up on my back foot, and would pull every shot. By working on feeling the weight of the club as it settles at the top, then triggering my hip, has me straight down the middle. Also, I would think that stopping somewhere undefined would cause inconsistencies. If you don't finish your back swing, how do you know exactly when to trigger your hip to initiate the downswing?
