  • Hitting Low Irons

I can't do it. Whenever I try to I either get too much ground or hit the top of the ball. No luck at all. Not that I can hit the lower irons for distance but at least I hit those into the air.

Any help would be appreciated. And if anyone has video that would be great.

    Hi pal.
A fairway wood and a long iron contact the ball right at the bottom of the swing arc, as opposed to a short or a mid-iron where the ball is struck as the clubhead is descending, and a tee shot with a driver where contact is made as the clubhead begins its ascent.
You have to pay close attention to your ball position for your chosen club.

    Hope this helps.

    cheers

hey dj, I would work on that slice first and then it will make the longer irons easier to hit because you will be swinging better.
looking at your name I would guess you are a dj who lives in central florida?
      good luck in the search

        Not an expert by any means but I would suggest the following;

        1. Place the ball a little further forward in your stance - you should be 'sweeping' the ball more as opposed to hitting it with a desending blow.

        2. Maintain spine angle and ensure shoulders remain level.

        Hope this helps.

          Spot on Aftford!

A golf swing bottoms out around the left armpit, longer clubs should have the ball placed around this position so the loft of the club sweeps the ball off the ground, you should not try to scoop the ball into the air. Also a full shoulder turn is necessary with a low swing plane.

Shorter clubs require the clubface to pinch the ball into the ground by hitting into the back of the ball, this will get the ball airborne. It requires the ball being more central in the stance encouraging a downward contact.

          Regards
          Brian

also, with the long irons you have to be smooth.
If you are alternating between topping and chunking you are probably swaying/reverse pivot.

You cannot help the ball into the air with the long irons, it will just be horrible.
You need your hands ahead of the ball and correct balance.
Try a 3/4 swing with your weight biased towards your front foot, you wont get full distance as you wont have a proper weight transfer, but you should get a better contact.
            Sweep that ball!

he says he slices so that means he flips into impact which will make the bottom of his swing arc behind his left shoulder so fixing the slice first would be ideal
