  • HELP!!! Hand Position at top of swing?!

First let me say 2 tips I read on here last week has helped me bring my swing back to where it used to be! BUT.....

My hands at the top of my swing feel extremly weak! Sometimes it feels as if the club will slip out of my hands. But I am holding the club tightly but not over doing it so I know thats not the problem. The problem is how my right hand feels on the club. Everything feels great until I get to the top. Could it be my right hand position on the club or is it the position of both my hands at the top? Can someone give me some good tips/swing thoughts to get my grip back to feeling strong at the top of my swing?

    THANKS!

Well without a picture of your top of swing position it is impossible for me or anyone else to even remotely begin to answer your question. Saying you feel weak, strong or anything else is very subjective. But if you must have a "lets wing it" answer, I would say to work on your grip pressure, if it feels good at address, then it should be the same at the top, unless something is changing, i.e.. losing your grip. The basic teaching says flat left wrist, right wrist under shaft, and if any hand/wrist should feel strong, it would be the left, since the left controls the swing, that being said, I would think the right feeling weak would be a good thing, never really paid much attention to it in my swing.

Sorry...I really wish I did have a picture...I sometimes catch myself having the club pointing to the left of the target though....but what do you mean when you say left hand flat and right hand under the shaft.....once your arms are parrallel with the ground what should be the motion of the hands? At the top of my swing the back of my left hand and the palm of my right hand are pointing in the same direction, which is right out in front of me.

Maybe this well help, maybe not, but worth a try to give you an idea of top of swing position.

grab your club as if you arre going to hit, standing straight up club in front of you, now place the shaft on your right shoulder, turn your upper torso so your back faces the target, bend from the waist (same angle you would have at address) and push your hands up vertical from your shoulder position until your left arm is extended (right arm will form an "L"). This is where you should be at the top of the swing. Just try to duplicate this position during a swing.

Re: HELP!!! Hand Position at top of swing?!

THIS IS actually something that i used to struggle with...it feels as if your hands disconnect from the club at the top of the backswing(right-hand).....the problem that i saw in my swing was that my grip was incorrect......

remedy for me was..........make sure your left hand grip is felt in the three fingers starting from the pinky to the middle finger..... showing 2knuckles...

right hand grip........u should feel pressure in the thumb and index finger...

imagine popping the head off a dandilion weed with your right hand.....lol

not a pro but just trying to CAUTIOUSLY HELP

Re: HELP!!! Hand Position at top of swing?!

you can try something that is a bit unconventional. as you take your backswing, feel as if the palm of your right hand is bending back while facing the ground. the idea is to prevent you from fanning the club out on the backswing . If it doesn't work after a few tries forget it, but the image and motion have helped me.
