Here is a drill to help with distance from the ball.

Stand facing the ball with your feet at shoulder width and knees straight. Take your grip on the club and hold it out straight in front of you at arms length, Keep your arms in this position and bend from the hips (not the waist) until the club head touches the ground, now flex the knees slightly. All you need to do now is keep this position and move to the ball, it will work with all your clubs.

Scroll down to "Distance: A Fist Plus A Thumb". This is perfect for woods. Use a little less for irons, IMO, maybe "A fist plus half a thumb".

With your feet shoulder width apart, hold a club (say a mid-iron like a 6-iron) straight out in front of you. Start lowering the club until the inside of your upper arms just touch your chest. Bend from the hips until the club is just hovering above the ground. Then just bend your knees until the club touches the ground. Your arms should not feel tight but relaxed. You should be the proper distance from the ball. If you can take your right hand off the club and your arm does not tend to move towards your body you are in the correct position. The right arm should move easily to the club with no effort. Take a few practice swings to see where the club clips the turf. Where the club hits the turf you want to place the ball at that position just before where the grass was clipped.

            Re: Newbie Golf Swing

What I am refering to is this: If you are in the proper position at address you should be able to take your right hand off of the club and let it just dangle. Your right arm should not stray from its position at address. In other words it should not swing in towards your body. If it does swing in towards your body you are reaching out too far towards the ball. You don't want to have to reach for the ball at all. The arms should hang straight down from your shoulders. The only time you reach for a ball is when it is in 3 feet of water and you are trying to retrieve it.

So let me see if I am hearing you correctly. When I am in my stance bent over at the hips. my arms basically should be hanging straight down ? That seems like I would be bent way over from where i am now. do you have a picture or drawing of the proper address?

Take a look at this web site:

Maybe I should have referred you to this to begin with.
Have a great day and keep it in the short grass.
