  • Draw System

I am a 23 handicapper in Australia, still struggling with pulls and slices in my drives.
I've sought professional coaching advice but mainly get told go back to a 3 wood and you'll have more control.
I've tried coming more from the inside but can't seem to release the club and I then tend to leave the ball to the right. (a push).....it's frustrating!
I've noticed advertising on the internet "Nick Bayley's - The Draw System"......has any body tried this.....does it work.....is it worth investing in?

Being told to go back to your 3-wood for more control isn't really a solution is it??? Advice like that from professionals makes me seriously angry ...

    Anyway ...

If you are pulling and slicing, the key indicator is that your swing path is from the outside. If your club face is square to that swing path you'll pull it, if the club face is open, you'll slice it.

Before we get into drills and corecting your swing path, do yourself a favour and check your alignment. You won't believe how often students believe they are pulling and slicing when in fact they are hitting it straight at their alignment target!!

We need to get the swing path from the inside, rather than the outside ... there are a number of drills that'll help you.

    1. Get the feeling that you are staying behind the ball and your shoulders are pointing slightly right at impact, a little closed. This is an over correction drill and works wonders. Be careful that 'by staying behind' the ball at impact you must still transfer your weight and open the hips ...

    2. Setup to the ball and pull your right foot back by a foot-length, your hips should be nicely closed. Now swing as normal and on the downswing focus on swinging along the line of feet and be sure to get the right side to fire through following the club into and through impact ...

To square the club up at impact which will reduce or eliminate the movement in the air, is a tough ask but the best way is to feel as though your left wrist holds firm through impact and your right palm is facing the target.

This should be a good start and if you need more help, be sure to post again and we'll work on it some more. I don't think you need to invest in anybody's system ... being a 23-handicapper you have to accept that you will be inconsistent but there is a lot you can do to improve without applying "systems".

I would check the grip, more than likely you are not promoting a draw/release even if you were to have the correct swing path.

        Thanks guys...appreciate the feedback!
I believe my alignment is ok, because when square to the target, I will probably then hit a fair percentage of straight/push/slices. (Naturally I then tend to aim a little left to counteract)
If I concentrate on coming from the inside, I can do it, but it then tends to then be a big push/slice because the club face doesn't close effectively.
And yes, I know I don't release the club correctly.
I can only do it by swinging slowly and flipping my right hand through impact....it's sometimes effective!
I've thought maybe I'm gripping too tight?
....and by the way, I've tried strengthening the grip by turning the hands to the right....again, it doesn't work for me!....makes no difference!

          Hi Bobby,

There are some expensive aids to help you swing from the inside, here is a cheaper option:

If you have the cardboard box a club is posted in (usually around 4 inches square by 5 foot high), cut it in two and tape one on top the other so it overhangs by around one foot.

Place the box in front of you with the open end pointing forward towards the direction of your target. Now tee your ball under the overhang and take your swing so that you hit the ball out from under without hitting the box. It will force you to make the club approach from the inside, otherwise you will strike the box.

          Hope this helps

            Re: Draw System

            hi,

i am a bad slicer or hooker too. but recently i had two different rounds where nothing could go wrong with the driver. it was a great feeling. on each account the following round was terrrible, all over the place. but today i may have solved it for me, not sure, but will see on the next round (once i hang the remnder note on a string from the bring of my hat). for me its balance, not from left side to right side or vice vrs. its leaning, but not much, i found some times for what ever reason i start my set up with me putting more wieght on the balls of my feet. i have very high arches, dont know if this has anything to do with it, but when i stand at the ball now and i try and blance from the balls to my heels looking for a balance position my upper body moves quite a bit almost as if its leaning, toward the ball or away from the ball. very rarely do i put too much wieght on my heels. it all seems stem from putting too much weight on the balls of my feet. when this occurs and i hook one, it is almost like stood up and literally turned like a top.

so just a thought, next time your out, look at the weight distrubution on your feet and play with moving it around a bit and notice the feeling or how it feels. once you feel like your evenly weigted get the driver and see if it works for ya.

                Re: Draw System

Here is another approach that has worked for me. Think of the face of your club as a tennis racket or ping-pong paddle. Now in both of those cases the racket or paddle is used to hit with over-spin to get the ball over a net. In golf, we don't have to get a ball over a net but the same idea can be used to get rid of your slice. If you start with a mid-iron like 6 or 7 instead of the driver you will be amazed as the ball will start out right and curve back to the left. Another way to make this move is when you are approaching the ball from the inside on your down swing think about throwing-the-toe of the club at the ball. This encourages you to rotate your right wrist over your left. At the range you might set your ball on the ground or on a tee with the logo pointing towards your right foot area (if you are right handed). Then focus on that logo and try to hit it by throwing-the-toe of the club. It will work. Eventually you can work up to your woods using the same method.
