  • turned my slice into a hook.help please!

    hi all,
    i need help guys!
i have been hitting my irons sweetly for a few weeks now and having been working on straightening out my fades and slices.
all of a sudden im now hitting pulls and hooks ive looked closely at address grip alignment ball position but now im stumped!
my irons are custom fit and the grips are really comfortable but the grips on my 3wood are 1/8" smaller in diameter could this be the problem?
    the head is offset also
ive started taking the club back low and slow could i be over doing it?
    thanks in advance

    Hi,

Slices and hooks are quite often (But not always) caused by a similar swing fault, an out to in swing path caused by an OTT motion. The only difference with the slice or hook is how open or closed your clubface is at impact.

Check your downswing, is it coming from the outside, are your divots pointing left? If so then work on the swingpath.

    Hope this helps
    Brian

      hi brian
      thanks for your reply
i have no divots to look at because this problem is solely with my 3wood and driver hitting them off a tee.
i am hitting 5i-sw perfectly straight every time

        Hi Slater,

OK, look at your swingpath with your Driver / 3 wood then, it will probably be out to in.

Make sure your arms are hanging straight down from your shoulders. With the longer clubs, there is more of a tendency to reach. When this happens, the club tends to go more around the body and gets stuck behind you. In this case, you become forced to have a more OTT move.

I'm guessing (without seeing the swing) that you are over-rotating your hips. One drill to try on the range is to point your left toes towards the target (assuming you are right handed) and hitting some shots, this won't let you over-rotate.

If this doesn't work you may be releasing the club too early and the face isn't square at impact. You want to have the feeling of the thumbs going to the lesft ear on follow through. Your fingers should not point skyward or to the gound...

              thanks guys
could an undersize grip add to the problem?
all my other clubs have the same grips which are 1/8" in diameter larger!

the smaller grips could make you a little more handsy and closing the clubface down, try a weaker grip with your woods
