  • Off-set or blades

    Hi Guys
Always been playing with off-set irons (ping i2, ping i3) and currently with ping i3+. Want to buy new irons, looking at ping i5, but local pro said I should go for the ping s59 irons. Playing off a 8 handicap, hitting my irons with a slight draw on a good day. Distance is ok after some previous help from you guys. Have hit one or two shots with s59 iron during a round(playing partner), and was very good. Unfortunately due to my location I cannot get a set to try out.
Is there a massive diffirence between the two( I've heard that the s59's are not 100% blades, and do have a bit of off-set).
Any advise please on making a choice.

    Hi,

    Why are you changing them?

      Hi Brian
Guess trying to keep up with technology would be a good answer.....mind telling me it's time for a upgrade? Would switching to s59 help my game?

        Hi Collie,

I just find that changing clubs does not really have any lasting effect on your game unless they are worn, damaged or you just don't like them. I know a number of players that change equipment on a regular basis and spend a lot of money on the latest and most expensive clubs but with no effect on their handicaps.

But! if you just feel like a change and don't mind the expense then do it.

        Cheers
        Brian

So you don't think that the s59's would be "more difficult" to play like lot of people say about blades or semi-blades?

Well, that's asking me to get off the fence, OK here goes!!

The preference between cavity backs and blades is rather personal and mainly the choice of low handicappers. Blades have additional feel that help to shape shots but are unforgiving if hit away from the sweet spot, as an 8 handicapper you would probably like the added control of them. These G58s (I have not seen a G59) appear to be a hybrid between a blade and a cavity so I guess will have some of the characteristics of both.

There is actually very little difference between the S59's or new new S58's and the I3+ blades. The "weight port" over the sweet spot on the I3+blades makes the impact feel blade-ish and if you can hit I3's well you shouldn't have a problem with the S59 or S58 blades because they have a small cavity incase you do mis-hit a little.

The difference between the two is more cosmetic - the S-series have almost no offset, a much thinner topline and sole and they are slightly smaller.

If you are in George (I see you are a member at Fancourt), why not ask my friend Mark Wiltshire at the Performance Lab to order you demo 6-irons from Ping? He might be able to get them failing which e-mail The Pro Shop or take a drive on a weekend day to the CT store, they have the full Ping range. (Ask for good friend of mine Colin McHardy at the Pro Shop).

                Hi Graham
Thanks. I currently have the i3+ off-set clubs and not the blades. Also think the best thing to do would be to try and arrange clubs to try out. ps.my normal misshit shot is the fat one because of swaying off the ball......otherwise connection not to bad.
