  • The most useless training gismo

We’ve all bought them at some time or another in the hope that our game can be transformed overnight, so tell us what’s the most useless or plain stupid bit of kit your bought.

My own mistake was buying a ring you fit into a golf hole from a local market. The idea being that it reduced the hole size to make puts harder, only problem was the outer diameter was smaller than the hole and so it just fell into the bottom of the cup.

Re: The most useless training gismo

I can't say that I have purchased any "kits" that did not work, simply because I have never purchased any. Maybe a book or two that were of little help, or were of some other author's work, using different discriptive words. Also, I tend to spend a lot time at my local driving range, and very seldom if at all, have I ever seen anyone using a training aid. That being said, the one that gets a chuckle out of me is the one with the metal wire hook that you're suppose to hook in your crotch. What it does for some one, I have no idea. It might even work for all I know, but it is just thinking about it that gets a grin out of me.

What I might suggest, and have done, is to make your own version of whatever training aid you think will help a person's golf game. You can save yourself a lot of money, while gaining a better understanding of the swing concept the inventor is trying to sell.

On the flip side, I think everyone owns one of the better swing aids already, and always carry it their bags, perhaps unknowingly. That is a club you can lay on the ground as an alignment aid. I very seldom see this training aid being used on the range. Another swing aid, that most people own, is a video camera. Hard to fix, and/or understand what you can't see. GJS

I'm with GJS - I have training aids that I own and should use (but don't), like putting mats, etc. But the #1 training aid, IMO, is a video camera. Use early, use often.

I have never purchased any, but I have been given heaps---I personally would rather spend my money on the game and instruction. I was given one of those putting green strips--that sucked...oh and one christmas someone gave me this little plastic gismo that had a ball on the end of plastic swinging arm... It would tell you what type of shot you hit, etc...the second shot I took sent the plastic ball and swinging arm straight across the room and imbedded itself into the wall next to the xmas tree---NICE!!!!

I tried a friends double hinged Medicus once---6 swings to perfection or was that the inside PVC foam jobby from Jack---anyway the Medicus was alright for setting up tempo and pretty decent at swing plane. I liked that you could hit balls with it as well.

Gee I wonder what I am going to get this xmas.... I hope it is lessons...

ones that I have tried, the swing setter has got to be tops on that list, completely useless IMO, well useless to everyone except ledbetter who made a lot of money off of it.

worst thing I ever bought was a driving range card with $60 on it. All I did was go down and hit away buckets of my good shots. All gone now....
I have to wait until 80 good shots saved up again before I can play.

Seriously best aids are pulled club shafts. Use one for alignment. Put it behind you to keep you from going inside or outside. Put it at the ball to stare at and check your head movement (and it marks where your divot should start!!)
