hello, I went Golf Galaxy here in MN. I actuallt went there to kill some time. I was watching a guy try out some clubs on the golf sim. It was pretty neat. It gives you the distance of the ball, direction, slice, fade ect... It also tells you the ball speed and club speed.

My question is how accurate are the sims. This one is with real clubs and balls. I have had a pretty good slice when I started a month ago, and after going to the range a bit now it went from a push or straight slice to more of a pull slice while on the course.

Today hitting at the sim. It said i was hitting more of a fade and was keeping the ball on the fairway. I was averaging around 235-250. My swing speed was about 100mph and the ball speed was averaging around 145-150mph.

Are those good speeds and are the sims worth anything as far as predicting real world shots. He said with my swing speed he would suggest a shaft a little more on the stiffer side than average.

Right now I am using the Top Flight target brand set of clubs. The driver I was hitting with there was a cleveland 460cc which they were selling around 300 bucks. WOW.

Golf simulators are as good as they are calibrated for. While looking for a new driver, I tested a few out using the simulator. I was averaging about 100 yds carry for a total of about 130 yds. This did not inspire me to buy anything as my normal drive goes between 180 - 210. The salesman's response was that the machine was calibrated for a certain swing speed, etc, etc. So... if they can set it differently, it really means very little. Try the clubs at an outdoor range to get a true picture.

Hi, I thought I'd give my input on golf simulators. I teach using them and there ARE accurate. They basically work on getting stats after impact, they compute all that data and come up with a ball flight.

They're of course as accurate as the maths and the calculations programmed into them but the good ones are very accurate.

To test them one day, I hit of one of monitors outdoors. The reading was 282 distance and the actual using a Bushnell was 280, the reading was 12 yards off line, it was actually 14 yards offline. So, yeah I'd say it was pretty accurate.

If they weren't accurate, the club manufacturers wouldn't use them.

i belive they are good telling you what you speed and ball flight look like
the diference is who are helping you i went golfsmith and the service are bad not what they advertise in the web and tv

I'd agree that the better, more exspensive simulators are more accurate. What you have to watch out for are the less exspensive models out there that a company will just throw in their shop to help impress a client. I know I have used a few simulators in the past, at some very well know golf gear outlets, and they were not close to my on course ball flights. This while using my own clubs. Using your own clubs is a good way to define the accuracy of simulator. You know your own ball flight, and if the simulator shows something different while using your own club, then something might be suspect with that particular simulator.

I found this out the hard way, while looking for a 1 iron club to make up some distance. The simulator showed a a decent draw time after time while trying this new club out. I went a head and purchased it based on the simulator's information, and some sales talk from the fitter/salesman.

The surprise came when I took the club out into the real world of golf. Nothing but straight pushes right with a few slices thrown in. The problem was an easy fix, but it took a shaft replacement. The fitter that put the fix together for me when I returned home remarked that simulators would be more accurate, if the mat that is used to hit off, would react the same way as real turf, and if the computer would interpet the ball spin on the screen correctly. He did agree that a simulator was most accurate when discribing swing speed, launch angles, and ball speed.

My home course club fitter relies on his own eyes, and the actual ball flight when fitting clubs to his clients. No surprises there. GJS

hi all
i still use my old mitsubishi gl500, and it good at distance never more than 3/4 yards out and same for distance right or left, its a good 17 years old but still think its as good as any if you want to take on to range with you and see the real ball flight and not some image on a screen. you get clubhead speed, face angle into ball and at hit point and angle an inch two two past ball, also if on toe or heel or sweet spot. what more you want to know and you still get them on e-bay for about £20, think mine was about £250 new.
