  • Hitting it Fat!!! Or thin Sometimes!!!

I'm haveing a problem with my irons. I can help but hit the ball fat on most of my approaches. I don't have this problem when chiping or pitching. I recently had my swing looked at, and there is a little sway when i start my backswing that has been corrected. he thought that may have been the cause of the problem. Since then I have worked hard on correcting my sway and have succeeded, but still the fat shots just keep coming. Anyone know a drill or have any suggestions to help me out with this problem.

    Thanks,

    Nick

go and grip your club, tell me, does the thumb on your right hand, assuming you are a righty, point straight down the shaft?

No. Looking down at it, it lays over the shaft slightly to the left.

Contact should be ball 1st, then turf. If you are casting or flipping, you could hit shots fat and thin. The reason you don't have that problem when you pitch or chip might be that you really don't hinge the wrists as much. They stay pretty passive when you chip and pitch (or they should).

You want to maintain that loaded wrist as far into the downswing as possible** It feels funky, but it works

The best tip I have ever got from a pro....feel like you are pulling the club down with your left hand. Don't swat at the ball with your right. If you are rotating properly and coming from the inside, the left hand will naturally turn over producing a pretty nice draw.

As for shootin's question, I am curious if shootin is trying to find out if you have you are using a strong or weak grip....

Could be the "Hammer" or the "Accordian":

            Greg...

Would you say in your opinion that those who RP also tend to cast?

BTW...great page. If you can stop yourself from doing all 3 of those mentioned fault, you can do nothing but hit a better shot.

Sure, reverse pivoters swing from the top down, it's about the only way they feel balanced when all the weight is thrown around their body.

where the thumb goes down the shaft is usually not dependent on weak or strong, but it is the first place I would look, next place I would look woud be ball position, then after that I would look for the rear knee, is it straightening on back swing. ACQ can you answer those last two?

Ball position is in the middle of my stance with a 5 and 6 iron. When I get to 7 iron through Wedge it moves back about a ball ro two depending on the club. 4 iron and 3 iron it moves up about a ball or two.

On the video my back knee was locking a little on the backswing along with a little lean toward the target when I got to the top. I have been working hard on correcting those two faults, and have pretty much succeeded. I think that if I had a better thought on how to initiate my downswing I would be in the clear. I have also been working on holdong my angle (lag) and just letting the club release naturally. That has helped tremendously. Any thoughts on a thought to initiate my downswing. I've heard of the hip bump, but I can't feel it. I have been trying to kind of push my left knee toward the target to start my hips going through. Feels awkward.

                  Thanks,

                  Nick
