How far should I stand from the ball?

I know that obviously this will depend on the club and probably your height, and your setup posture... but are there any golden rules to tell how far you should stand from the ball?

I played a round today, and the last few holes I experimented with standing a little further away from the ball than normal, and I'm wondering if it helped my swing - perhaps it helped to create a consistent in-out swing path?

When you set up take your right hand off the grip and spread your fingers out and then put your right hand in between the end of the grip and your body, that should be how far away you stand from the ball, so you can easily fit your right hand (spreaded out) in between the grip end and ur body.
