I kept slicing right every time...standing upright like you said helped me get it straighter.I tried it today at the driving range thanx..and also finding a driver that suits.....doug
I find that gripping the club too tight is a major cause of hooks.
I start with a light, relaxed grip; then make a full turn of the shoulders so that your back is facing the target at the top of the backswing. Start the downswing by transferring your weight back to your left side.
Don't worry about over swinging at the top. I think that a lot of hooks are caused by golfers trying to stop the club when they think it is parallel to the ground as so many teachers advise. I find that provided that your left arm is straight, it better to just let the swing continue until it feels complete, like John Daly.
