  • Keep Pulling My Iron Shots, What's the Problem?

    Hi to all.

I have had a previous problem driving were I have been cutting across the ball or hitting the toe of the driver face, which has been causing it to slice.
I have now corrected this by standing more square/closed, keeping the right elbow in and standing a bit closer to the ball. I am now striking the driver very solid and instead of a slice now and can see the the extra distance and the amount of shots I keep in play.

Since doing this I am now finding that when I hit iron shots from 3-8 iron I tend to pull the shot well to the left and sometimes causing a bad hook.

I then try and correct this by opening the clubface up, however this causes me to duff, top the shot and cause more problems than the pull. (At least the pull shot allows me to get the distance and leaves me a chip shot to the green).

Can anyone give me any advice of what I could practice or what the fault my be to enable me to hit staighter shots.

I find it very frustrating that I am hitting straighter and longer shots from the tee, and in the perfect position to have a go at the Pin and then blow it! I currently go around between 83-88.

    Regards

Re: Keep Pulling My Iron Shots, What's the Problem?

First thing that comes to mind is your driver setup should not be the same as your irons. Make sure your irons have your feet pointing slighty open (or to the left of the target for RH). The Driver gets away with being closed to help the shoulders and torso get back for a bigger wind-up. But this position on an iron is what can cause hooking. The irons like to be steep and slightly on a out-to-in path causing nice high fluffy flights...

Next, relax more on irons. Feel less urgency to have to hit it hard, but rather think more in terms of "pure contact"..."proper tempo" to propel it the right distance. Hitting the ball 100% of the time with the irons can cause the hands to over do it and create the early release causing hooks.

      Hi,

You may be swinging the club sharply left through impact while raising your right shoulder. The first place to look is the first check position at follow through. After impact stop your swing with the club pointing at the target with arms fully extended, toe of the club pointing directly upwards. Your right shoulder should be under your chin.

Page through Luke Donald's swing on this video link, it shows this clearly.

If you are using a strong grip for driver to avoid slicing, this will close the clubface on irons so hold your irons out in front of you to make sure the toe is pointing straight up and not closed.
Next, if you slice with your driver it means you may be coming over the top, an over the top swing(OTT) will sometimes produce a pull.
Check your ball position to make sure you are not playing the ball too far forward, you should try middle of feet for most irons.
Next, check your iron divots, if they point way left, this means you are swinging that way. Try to swing more out to square to in rather than in to out.
Also, make sure with irons that you are leading the downswing with the clubhead and not the hands, you can tilt the shaft at address a little or alot forward to make sure you are leading backswing with clubhead and leading downswing with hands and clubhead comes in last at impact creating lag and power.
Now check alignment to make sure you are not aligning too far left or right; your brain being the computer it is, will tell the body to do all sorts of things if your alignment is off.
Remember, the golfswing is an oval motion not circular; thus, the myth of taking the club straight back. While straight back is ok for the first 18 inches, you then want to be turning inside(oval) going back fully and in to out at impact.

Other have given you good advice so far.
Here's something else you might want to look into.

Just move your ball back. Of course, experiment with small increments.
I personally have my ball positioned such that the left edge is in the middle of my stance. This allows for a downward blow and also creates less pulls.

If your swing is powered mostly from the right side, both the bottom and apex of the downswing is more to the right than compared a left side powered swing.

            Thanks Greg
I will give this a try, down the range.

Re: Keep Pulling My Iron Shots, What's the Problem?

Thanks Brian, I have not checked the finish position out the ball flight is usually what I look at and then think it must be the position of the club.
I will hit a few and see if this is happening.

Gark I have tried this one out already thinking the ball was to far and being at the end of the swing the club face starts to close. I then pull it back which works for the low irons 9-PW, but then I start topping the ball which then feels like a slap rather than a sweet smack.
However it may be that after hitting a few like this you tend to stop it, rather than persevere a bit more. I will also give it a try.
                Thanks very much

Re: Keep Pulling My Iron Shots, What's the Problem?

For myself, when I pull my irons left, it's because my shoulders are aligned left of my target line at address, even though my feet and hips are aligned properly. This may not be your problem though.

Check your divots if they are pointing left of you target you are swinging out-to-in.

                      Hey Newburg:
I took the time to post but you ignored my post. Go f..k yourself and see if I answer any of your lame posts ever again.
If you think I am posting on this site for fun, you are mistaken. Take your out to in swing and shove it.
Why ask for help if when you receive it, you wind up ignoring it.
                      Loser.

                        Newburb,

How are your results? I'm having pretty much the same problem. I was hitting great iron shots but slicing the woods. Fixed my driver and 3 wood problem and started hooking and pulling my 3-7 Irons all the time now. How has the advice worked for You?

                          Barry

I opened the stance up, moving the ball back slightly and slowed the swing down. Which worked to good effect I was not pulling to many shots. (The odd mis-hit though) The downside to this was that I lost the consistancy that i was getting with my driver. (Started to slice a bit more again) I think this is due to me trying something different which rubbed off my driving swing. (Slowed down and relaxed to much I think I started to cut across the ball) The good news is that since then my scores have been 81 (My joint highest), 83 and 84. I can only put this down to the improvements in my short game. (Chip & Runs with a 8 iron).
What are you doing to fix the problem?

                          Regards
                          Barry
