  • The Magic Move

I got my new Golf Magazine over the weekend. There is an article from A.J. Bonar regarding "the secret nobody told you, the instant power move."

Of course this got my attention. But it goes against...well...everything I have been taught. From my pro, from my reading, from this site.

"The move (quoting the open paragraph) lets you do what instinctively feels right - swing with your hands instead of your body. The Magic Move rotates the clubface through impact - instead of trying to keep it square....EVERY Tour pro in the world uses the move..."

I then go on to read how to perform this. Here is what I have issues with.
    1) A cupped left wrist. Not overly cupped, but not flat.
    3) Keep your right palm facing the target going back, assuring that the face stays open.
    2) Setting up with an open clubface. He quotes 10 degrees several times.

    To perform the move....
    1) Imagine you're gripping a screwdriver and turning it counterclockwise.
    2) Keep your hands quiet and ahdead of the clubhead until you're two or three feet from impact, then aggressively rotate your hands towards the target. This turns over the clubface and unleashes your power.

Curious what many of you think? Is this something that can work? Personally I think it takes quite a bit of timing. Check www.golf.com/ajvideo to see the move.

    hi
its from his dvd the truth about glof thats been out for years, he says it all the arms and hands that give the power and you get that power from the "home run" i tried in and it did not work for me at all, but other say it works so who knows. i might give it another go, i cound not get my hands to turn at right time to hit the home run and i hit it left and right.

I can see how you can do it, but I cannot see how you would hit the ball longer. Seems like the timing needs to be very good.

I can tell you one thing for sure, not EVERY pro golfer does that.

Agreed. He says Tiger does it. Not sure about that. His takeaway is pretty close to square/closed. He is also pretty flat at the top.

Good thing I am not the only one scratching my head

I do have a slight left wrist cup, but I do cup the right at impact, which gives me a flat left wrist facing the target at impact. Which is what you want.

In the magazine, it shows close up pictures of his hands just before, at and after impact. It almost looks as if is left wrists goes from cupped to bowed, which is a move I am sitting here trying to mimic. Ok got it

This would take some timing, but it might help me think about getting into the slot. Like many, I fight that rush from the top.

So, I assume, to perform this move, I would really have to just left the hand drop down from the inside and keep the lower body a bit more quiet?

I would advise against everything he says.

Cupping the left wrist the amount he suggests will cause open club face problems, a small amount of cupping is acceptable where a strong grip is used, for a neutral grip the left wrist must be flat.

He suggests hitting down into the ball and is using a driver? It is OK to hit down into the ball with the appropriate short to medium irons but not long irons or woods.

Releasing through impact is correct and does square up the face and create head speed but its nothing to do with a cupped left wrist, it's by removing the lag angle in the wrist through impact by either rotation of the forearms or pushing through the right wrist.

He does discuss that the driver (only mentioned the driver) should be hit on the slightest of upswings. I personally swing up TOO much with my driver. I need to level it out quite a bit.

Not sure how much of this am I even going to play with. I am hitting the ball better. It a matter of starting a bit slower from the top and not rushing or push my hands away from me. I could probably use a bit more hip rotation.

But this won't cure over-the-top or tempo issues.

You are correct, it will not cure them, they are completely different issues.

Figured. This might help generate a square-closed face and maybe some more clubhead speed, but those are things I struggle with. I carry my drives 270 yards and hit my 6 iron 175.

Most of my issues are path and tempo related. Took me awhile to realize this.

These are respectful distances, the important issue is how straight they are though.

                          Re: The Magic Move

I tried this technique out in my backyard with some practice balls. It seems like it might work for some people. The con against it is that the "home run" part of it would have to be done perfectly or it would produce some terrible shots. A little late and you have an open clubface, a little early and you have a closed clubface when contact with the ball occurs. I'm gonna give it a try at the driving, but, it seems like a lot of trouble for a little bit of extra yardage.

Here we go again with the mixing and matching different style and techniques. When AJ talkes about cupped left wrist, YES you will cup it, have to cup it, IF you use a strong grip and hit a draw, weak grip will result in a flat left wrist and usually involve fading the ball. Use a strong grip (hands turned to the right alot) and try to have a flat left wrist at the top, and you are going to spend the majority of your golf day in the woods on the left from all the duck hooks your going to hit. Same token try to cup the left wrist with a weak grip, just head to right woods, because that is where it will be.

The idea here is too get your clubface at a 45 degree angle to the ground at the top, your wrist cupping is going to change dependant on your grip to acomplish this, why 45 degree at the top, because that would be a square clubface, same reason the toe should straight up when the clubshaft is parallel going back, because then the face is square and you do not have to manipulate it in any way coming back down. More golf swing are screwed up when trying to mix and match different fundelmentals, like setting up for a draw and trying to hit a fade, then can't understand why the ball goes into the woods.

I fight a pull with my driver. Which most people I play with dont even notice. I'll take a 5 yard off line pull that stays in the fairway over a slice. When my path is good, I hit a nice draw that starts right of my target and ends up.

With my irons I fight what I call a "pull-draw." Starts right at my target and draws left from there. Again, a plane issue. Need to come from the inside to square.
