  • Help!!!! Every thing going Left

    Guys,

I hurt my back and laid off hitting anything but putts and chips for two weeks. I went to the range today and everything is a hook. I've never had this problem before. This is killing me. I can't play golf hitting like this and will probably quit if this keeps up. I went again tonight and the same thing. This is just depressing as all get out. I hit some decent drives, 3 woods and wedges but every iron shot is a pull or a hook.

Dont quit Barry..the cure is there ..you just gotta find it.I have fought a hook with my woods for the last year and a half.I will get over it thru trial and error and then it will creep back from out of nowhere. When im hitting straight drives i can shoot 80-81..but let that hook flare up and its 90's time again. What i have found thru much practice regarding this matter is that usually the hooks start when i get too flat on my swing plane. When i take the club straight back from ball for the first 6 inches or so and then let the wrist hinge take it to the inside and up..i start SPANKIN' it straight again!!.Now with your irons it could be that you are not hinging your wrist soon enough in your swing.Remember its not a long and hard hitting swing that gets the job done.. its the comfortable compact swing that is effortless that make the shots fly long and true-Let us know how its going next time you get out there.David

      Hi Barry,

That's right, don't quit the solution is there somewhere you just have to find it.

Your hooks will be down to a closed clubface through impact so what is causing it? Look at these things first:

Check your grip, is it too strong?
Are you cupping your left wrist at the top?
Are you failing to extend your arms down the target line after impact and letting them cross too quickly across your body?
Are your forearms rotating too aggressively through impact?

Try this drill to check if the clubface is closed:

Take your full swing to a balanced completion then let your arms spring back in front of you, stop there and see if the clubface is pointing straight up or is open pointing left.

        Laserman

I've found that collapsing of the left wrist at the top of your backswing may be the reason-Keep that wrist in line with your left forearm. Another reason may be a too strong grip or your left hand releasing a little bit at the top-Meaning that theres a gap between the grip and your palm of your hand. Ive had this problem before and it was the reason for me.
Another reason may be a too aggressive hip turn or swatting of your wrist at impact. Keep your wrist solid at impact. Dont move them forward or back.Wrists mus t be the same at impact as at adress.

Don't quit. All problems can be overcome by correcting your faults.

          My two cents, Laserman

First of all, check your aligment: feet, hips and shoulders. They could be too much to the RIGHT of the target.

Check if your hips stop TURNING or slow down through the impact zone and try to accelerate them.

Don't bend your knees so much at address.

          Good luck.

          Toni.

I have back problems. I have found that from time to time I protect my back by restricting my hip turn. When I do this I turn in to an arm swinger. Without a proper turn of the body the arms can do nothing but wrap to the left around your body. Don't know if this is your problem, but I fight it constantly when my back acts up.

              Guys,

After pulling out my instruction books and researching, plus pulling out my Medicus 5 Iron again I believe I'm not getting a full turn on back thru impact. Most likely because my back still hurts a bit. But I noticed this problem before I hurt my back on the range from time to time. I use to have a slicing problem so I changed to a rather exaggerated strong grip which I knew in time I would have to return to a more gradual grip after the slice was cured. The slice has pretty much been cured now for a month or more, so I will change my grip a bit more to nuetral and work on the hip turn and see if this helps. Using the medicus I realized I fell back into my old habit of swinging too fast and not getting a solid one piece take away. So I must work on that as well. I get good use out of the medicus Iron but not the Medicus Driver. Also, I might be doing something with the wrist at the top of my backswing. I thought that felt funny and different but I didn't quite know what is was . I noticed that my left wrist does hurt today. I could either overcocking the wrist at the top or turning my wrist at, after or before impact. So much to fix Hmmm. I might hit the range tonight again or wait a day. I don't want to hurt my back again. I won't give up!

                Guys,

Went back to the range again tonight. Out of 75 Balls 5 were good strait 7 irons, every thing else went left again. I guess I'm gonna let my back heal for a month and then take a lesson cause I'm lost and very discouraged now. Before I hurt my back I was shooting in the 80s and now I can't hit a single shot. I won't play hitting this bad. There's just no fun in hitting constant hooks. I'd be lucky to break 120 now and I'm just not gonna do that. I'd rather not play than do this.
