  • Still chunking and casting!!

I’m still chunking 3 or 4 Irons a round and I’m not sure why.
I take my practice swing and it feels great but then when I’m hitting the ball I take an almighty divot and it often starts just before the ball.
I’ve tried moving the ball further and further back but it seams the further back the ball is the further back the divot starts. I know I also release the club head way too early and my hands are behind the ball at impact. Are these too things related? If I fix the early release will it fix the chunking??

Also does anyone have any drills for releasing the club at the right time?

    Thanks in advance.

Bang on line. no problems as far as swing path goes. When i hit the ball with my irons it goes nice a straight. It's when I don't hit the ball the problem starts.

      Thanks

Im wondering if on those shots, whether or not you are a little anxious to hit the ball and not allowing the backswing to finish. When this happens, there is not enough time for the left side to clear ( assuming righty) for the right arm to hit down on the ball.

I'll have to get to the driving range and get some video. Hopefully get a video of a chunk for you guys to look at.

try moving the ball further UP, when you move it back you may end up reverse pivoting, which if you did not reverse pivot you might had missed the ball completely

try and feel that you get all your weight to your right side and feel your head over the right leg at the top of the backswing, this will a/ stop the reverse pivoting (im sure your reverse pivoting) and then that will b/ stop the casting!

ricky, yes that could help but not if the ball is too far back

Bigdaz ses he has TRYED swings with ball further back, this doesent mean his ball is STILL to far back in his stance!

We cant see if his ball is too far back or to far forward can we? So we have to answer this question guessing his ball position is pretty good.

I understand ricky I was just suggesting that he try it further forward because maybe he has not tried that. the bottom of the swing arc is well forward of center, below left shoulder, but most people do not put their ball forward of center for irons.

When I see chunkers (others chunking), I focus on something in the background over their nose. Then I watch to see where their nose goes. If it raises then drops, I then look at the back leg. I watch if it straightens on the backswing. If it is still flexed ok, then I look at the spine-angle. That usually tells me what they are doing and the solutions to fix.

Have somone do this to you.

                          Re: Still chunking and casting!!

I just had the most awful time with my irons...especially long irons.

The fix: Got the video out! That's important because you may see the problem. With me...I noticed no matter how good a pivot I made, the club was going back on a weird, very steep plane. No matter what I did to focus on it, I couldn't get the clubs going more shallow and back on plane.

I noticed that my hands and arms looked a little funky on the setup. I focused on just letting my arms hang in front of me and gave a little more squat to my stance. This allowed my arms to free up and the change in swing was dramatic. I was cripsly hitting all irons and especially happy with 3-4-5 irons. They were high and long. Beautiful green stickers!

This may or may not help but...sometimes the problem is where we least expect it. Somehow, I got on this hands high and forward set up which was hurting my backswing, which, hurt my position into the ball. The arms were wrong, the legs were wrong, the butt was wrong.

                          Hope this helps!
