Looking at the difference between you an me. you're 6 handicap and i'm 16. You only make a putt less than me on average but you hit 51% of green where as i hit 20%. GIRs are looking like the key stat so far. I'm gonna have to work on my irons into the greens

        Re: stats for your handicaps

Daz, the only stat I haven't seen beyond myself is U&D%.

Since I only hit roughly 1 green per 9 holes, and get up and down twice per 9 holes, I will continue to score highly. For the record, I consider getting up and down any 1 putt following missing the green in regulation. In other words, I can get up and down for triple bogey, if the situation arises. The PGA tracks up and down for par as 'scrambling'.

The thing is that all stats are inter-related. If I miss a ton of greens, but can get up and down like a madman, then I'll have a low total putts per round. But the telling stat is putts per GIR. When I find the green, I don't get close enough to one putt - be it with a wedge or a 4 iron. In fact, at 2.2 ppGIR, I'd have to say that I 3 putt every 5th GIR.

3 putting every 5th GIR isn't too bad. How often do you 1 putt a gir?
I've dug out a few more cards i'm gona go through tham and figure out my putts per gir. I'll let you know.

No, in that light it doesn't seem too bad... but it would be horrible if I hit more greens! That would mean three 3 putts if I hit 15 GIR or more...

I rarely make bird (1 putt a GIR)... mostly on par 5s where I give myself a short pitch or chip for my 3rd.

Same here. I hardly ever make birdies. I guess we need to work on our approach play.

                      Re: stats for your handicaps

                      Played yesterday.
                      I hit 38.9% GIRs. 7/18.
up and down on 2 others.
I hit 37 putts though. Although i'm sure i putted well.
                      I lipped out on 5 putts. but i 3 putted 3 times.

Got 37 stableford points so it's a little better than my 16 handicap.

Gotta improve on the putting. Anyone ay tips??

                        hi bigdaz
dave plez has a bit in his book the putting bible where he taks about lipping out, he says if you hit a ball 2 feet past the hole so center of ball touches the lip the ball will always lip out, if you hit the same putt so ball goes 1 foot past the hole the ball will always drop in, if you hit the ball at the right pace you make the hole 6 inches wide as the ball will drop in, if you hit it to go 2 feet past the hole then it srinks and you have to hit the into the middle 3 inch of the hole for ball to drop or else it lips out. so but hitting the right pace you double the target. i tried it and what he says is true. pace of the ball is more important than line. people that putt with the right pace sink more putts than peole with good line but putt to hard.
                        hope that helps

Thanks Bill that does help, it makes perfect sense really. I'll look on ebay and see if I can get myself a copy of that book. Annoyingly yesterday 2 of my lip out were left about 2 inches behind the hole so the pace was pretty good. Never mind. Hopefully if I can get a copy of that book and spend the winter working on my putting but next spring I'll be a putting god. If anyone has a copy of the book that they're thinking of selling let me know.

                          Thanks

i was watching tiger in the ryder cup and he missed 4 putts from 3 foot and another yesterday all his puts went at lest 3 feet past the hole after lipping out. think he tried to play the ball through the break, plez said that dont work as you miss more than you putt.

Yeah i noticed that about tiger myself. it's so unusual for him to miss from that range. Isn't Dave Pelz, Phil Mickleson's putting coach? I'm asking that because Phil Mickelson is one player who always hits putts through the break. I've seen Mickelson 4 putt a few times now because he's hit put 4 and 5 feet past.

yes phils uses dave but think its more for his shor game now when an amature he used dave to help with his putting.
in the us open dave was working on his short game for the 6 days.
