Bill, it seemed to work for tiger when he was younger (hitting through the break), but then he had a very stiff wristed stroke. Now he is flipping abit and many say this is a problem in his stroke.

To be fair to Tiger it's just this past couple of weeks he's missed a few short one. he's probably not used to UK greens. If there was anyone you put your house on to sink a 6 foot or less put it's tiger. he does it so often under pressure.

I had a lesson on putting. I now have a very good putting stroke, and the biggest thing is I now spend time on reading the breaks and wheter I'm putting uphill or downhill, I used to look at the break and hit the ball either left or right of the hole, Now I aim past or short of the hole aswell. which has allowed me to get closer to the hole on every putt instead of having putts just as hard as the one I did before.

I am going to focus on chipping now, and try to read the greens on my chips aswell.

Would you recommend a putting lesson. If one lesson pointed you in the direction of being able to lose 8 putts per round I think it would be useful for everybody.

My putting was very wristy before the lesson, so the first part of the lesson was on stroking the putt. The next part was learning how to putt different distances by increasing or decreasing my putt stroke. He then explained about taking note of the speed of the putt, look at the grass grain are we putting against or with the grain, and the slope are we putting uphill or down hill. once we knew the speed we would putt to either short of the hole for faster downhill putts and past the hole for slower uphill putts. he then went onto the break, once you felt you knewwhich way it would break near the hole you would go to 90% from where you ball was to the top side of the break and see how steep the break was.

I only need to practice more to get a better feel of distance and breaks and I am sure I will make tones of longer putts. but for now the biggest improvment has been straight putts, I now putt along my intended target line where before I was all over the place.

For me on long putts I find alignment difficult. I usually try to line the logo up with my intended line but its difficult getting just right, even on straight putts. Sometimes I stand over the ball line my putter up with the logo and I think, this is all wrong this is going no where near the hole.

I've ordered Dave Pelz Putting Bible off amazon so it should arrive tomorrow. hopefully this will knock a few putts off my rounds.

Currently I'm concentrating on collating the number of shots I've been committed to.

When I was keeping track of my numbers I was recording fairways hit, shots within 30 metres and putts.

My downfall is hitting the fairways. I'll only hit 3 to 5 per round. I would argue that this is because I'm focusing my practice more towards my short game.

BigDaz, I'd be interested to see how your short game is. 34 putts is far too many. You're not getting the ball close enough to the hole. The goal for putts should be 1.5 per hole, ie, 27 putts per round.

Lowpost, what are you using off the tee? I now only use my driver on par 5's (wind and design of hole permitting).
That's a tough call 1.5 putts a hole, you would need to single put half the greens.

Yeah i was looking at the pga tour stats beforeat www.golfweb.com and 27.7 i think is the leader but 29 putts gets you well into the top 100. I'm never gonna putt as well as a top 100 pga tour player so i'm looking more at about 30 putts per round as a great target.

                      Re: stats for your handicaps

I picked up a great putting tip from Jack Nicklaus. He said if you tend to be an over hitter (like me) on longer putts aim at a point one foot in front of the hole, if you over hit by two feet you still have a one foot putt left.

On a slightly different point: I have started using the "Looking at the hole" method on putts over 6 feet and it has improved these putts tremendously.

                        Re: stats for your handicaps

Here’s my stats as promised, my official club handicap is 15.7, though I’m now playing to 11.
I keep a running total of the averages for all my rounds, but also monitor the most recent 6 rounds to check up on improvements or otherwise

Average score for the last 30 rounds is 85.8
Average score last 6 rounds is 82.2

22.4% Greens in regulation over 30 rounds,
                        28.7% last 6 rounds

31.5 putts per round over 30 rounds,
                        30.2 last 6 rounds
(putting stats are notoriously inaccurate though, I could miss every green in regulation then chip stone dead and return stats of 18 putts per round – the only way to do it is by Dave Pelz’s method of monitoring the length and success or otherwise of every putt)

49 shots (including putts) per round inside 100 yards over 30 rounds,
45.5 last 6 rounds (this is Dave Pelz’s idea too, the aim is never to take more than three)

Double bogies or worse over 30 rounds – 19.2%
                        Last 6 rounds – 12%

                        Bogies over 30 rounds – 41.5%
                        Last 6 rounds – 44.4%

                        Pars over 30 rounds – 35.7%
                        Last 6 rounds – 36.1%

                        Birdies over 30 rounds – 3.5%
                        Last 6 rounds – 7.4%

The trouble is these guys are hitting loads of greens in reg, and consequently they are putting from all over whereas WE are missing most greens and then (hopefully) chipping close, you can return a lot of one-putts that way!

I was the same (I went 10 rounds without a birdie even though I was scoring 85) until I made a decision to be less defensive with birdie putts and make sure they went past the hole if they missed. Dave Pelz's putting bible helped, but the main reason was a new method I adopted which uses your foot position as a "putting gauge" (as on a computer game)
If I stroke from one foot to the other at the same tempo (count 1000, 2000, 3000) the ball goes 8 paces on a flat green, just outside both feet is 11 paces etc. Add or subtract a pace or two for uphill/downhill wet greens and so on, and I don't get my distance wrong by much - if I do it's invariably because, for example,I've let the thought of an uphill putt interfere and given it a bit more on top of my calculation.
I've recently gone 6 rounds without 3-putting doing this, and of course if you putt everything past the hole, 3 or 4 of them go in.

Hope fully my Putting Bible will arrive today. I hope so can't wait to get reading it. The fact that over the past 6 rounds you've been hitting about 5 putts less than me shows that I need to work no that area. Although like you said you maybe missing the green and chipping close. My GIRs have gone up a lot recently. I hit 7 out of 18 at the weekend. Mariner, You're scores are much lower than mine, What is your course like. your handicap is only 0.3 lower, I'm scoring an average of around 81 but that is on a par 66 course so it's more like 87, you're scoring 82.

                              Thanks
