  • Off the heel

This is my first season playing regularly and I am a 20 handicapper. Recently I have been suffering from the problem of heeling everything right. The guys I play with have been telling me the problem is that I am getting inside really quickly on the backswing and also swinging really flat around my body. They say that by the time the club reaches the ball it is still fully open and as such sends the shot right.

The problem I have is that eveyone is telling me different things to do which is making it worse as I try to go through everything in my head just before I hit the ball.

Does anyone have a simple routine I could follow to stop me heeling everything right.

since we cannot see your swing, you need to be more specific on ball flight. Are these shanks - hitting the ball on the hosel, is this a push, is this a push slice. Remeber, there are only 9 possibilities for ball flight. Why, 3 possibilities for club path (inside out, inside inside or outside inside, and 3 possibilities for club face at impct. From what you are describing, it is either a push or a push slice. A push is an inside to outside swing with a square club face to the path, a push slice is an inside to outside swing with an open club face to the path.

Thank you for replying. My golf partners tell me that I am turning my hands on the way back and swinging around my body. They say that the angle of takeaway is so acute that the club is getting to the ball on the way back with the face open making the ball shoot right.

I understand what your are saying, but you still need to tell us if the ball is going right and the slicing - a push slice, or just straight right. It sounds as if you are actually fanning the club on the way back and the club is actally getting stuck behind you. Try taking the club back a few times and feel as if the heel of the club is leading the backsing rather than the toe. This may help to correct the fanning motion and widen your arc
