  • Gripping too tight

    Hi Folks.
Recently i broke my right wrist, luckily am now fully recovered, recently however i have found that i'm gripping my longer irons and woods too tightly causing a twisting effect of the clubface at impact which is leading to a severe hook..i have no problems with my shorter irons , this may be becuase my swing is shorter and i my grip is nice and relaxed.

    any thoughts ????????

      Hi Ricky
I understand what you are saying and i appreciate your reply.
When i consiously try to grip lighter with my longer clubs i find my grip to be too relaxed and i start to cast...

ok, I also dont really like gripping it real loose either!

You could check this, Maybe your not gripping it enough in the fingers and too much in the palm I think that might cause a tighter grip and secondly, what about trying deep breaths before each swing to relax your muscles?

          hi aft
a tip from trevino. when you swind back just as you reach full swing squeese with the last three fingers, he said of your left hand but would work if it was right to i think.
just a quick squeese and your fingers relax as you swing down but firm enough to control the clubface.
i do it if i'm tence over a tight drive and it does stop me from gripping to hard as i swing down.

              Re: Gripping too tight

Maybe the problem isn’t the grip pressure as much as some other mechanical element like grip position, wrist action, forearm rotation, club face angle, swing plane, etc.....I’m just shooting in the dark....that may be causing you to "need" to grip tighter.

It seems like when I feel the need to grip tighter (or when I feel the need to swing harder, or any number of other faults) frequently it’s more the symptom of some other fundamental problem.

              Good luck, bud.

Maybe your grips are just dirty, and need a good cleaning?

                    Hi Low.
Nice to hear from you Pal.
This may sound strange but an old guy over heard me telling a golfing buddy about my plight and said for me to go home and clean my grips.
Come to think of it , my shorter irons do get cleaned more often.

would be great if it is that simple...will let you know..

                      Re: Gripping too tight

I just had a friend 'realize' that he was choking his wedges open. He looked at his grips and realised why .

Buet they weren't only dirty, they were worn, too. Slick even after a good scrubbing. Better than they were, bu not good enough to avoid a regripping, IMO.

What I like to do if I feel myself gripping to tightly, and I also do this every single time I putt is: At address or in your preshot squeeze the club as tight as you can then relax your grip. It will help you relax the hands and maintain a constant grip pressure throughout the swing. This works for me!!1

This is a very good tip, especially for people who struggling to aquire a smooth putting action.

                          Good tip pal.

                              Re: Gripping too tight

Lets not go crazy with the lite grip here, that is almost as bad as a tight one. That club will be moving at speed and crashing into the ball then ground, you need to have a firm grip. The test is to hit three balls in a row without having to adjust or regrip. So how do you that, first you have to understand how to grip firmly while still allowing your arms and wrist to remain flexible, and that is the key flexible, not relaxed, not loose, flexible.

Everyone always says grip with the last three finger of the left, and the middle two of the right, but no one ever explains why, here is WHY.

The thumb and forefinger of each hand, will engage the muscles of the outside of the forearms, these are the bad muscles, these cause tension, and redues flexibility, try it, make the thumb and forefinger real stiff, see how your arms feel tight, and wrist don't want to move. if you relax these and use the last three of left and middle two of the right, you will engage the inside muscles of the forearm, and the arms/wrist will still be flexible. How hard you grip with them the ball test will determine, in my case it is around a 5 or 6 on a scale from 1-10, will be different for everyone dependant on your strenght. Stronger people don't need to grip as hard to maintain contol of the club.
