  • Fat and Chunky

Played a round golf yesterday and I must say I really drove very well off the tee and my short game was also OK. My problem came with my irons, I just couldn't stop hitting them FAT! This last night I re-read Gregg's website on hitting FAT, additionally my friend told me I should be concerned with keeping my right leg bent (I'm right handed) and keeping the weight on the inside of my right foot. He said this would keep me from swaying or I should say sliding. I haven't had a chance to try it but I was wondering what the opinions of other's were on this. My spine angle is OK just can't stop the sliding.

    try this thread http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/g...t#post10520181

i mention golf ball under outside of back foot can prevent sliding or there is a doorstopper from jamesh sounds like a good idea.. so i am assuming you are slideing back, that should help..... but if you have problems sliding front, i have a bit of trouble sliding myself, but the key to that is to rotate more and maintain tush line, when you maintain tush line you can go around but if you have your lower wasit in the way you need to slide to get to impact vs turning which is what you want.

        RobF,

you are probably keeping your weight on your back foot in the downswing causing you to hit behind the ball ( A reverse C ).

here is a simple drill that will encourage you to transfer your weight to the front foot:

Make a relaxed swing and as you strike the ball let your right foot step through to the finish position like you are taking a step forward. This will give you the correct feeling of weight transfer and the movement of the right side of your body pushing through the shot.

        Hope it helps.

brians right your not transferring your weight to the front foot, make some exaggerated swings on back swing bring left foot up on toes swing thru and bring right foot off the ground completely, this will give you the feeling of proper weight transfer

You should finish with your right Knee ( assuming right handed ) towards the target and end with the right foot on your toes. Finish in a balanced position and you have transferred you weight to the front foot.

what finally worked for me and my sore elbows was to make sure and maintain the tush line especially thru impact.

                  Re: Fat and Chunky

Here's a few possible reasons for this problem.Weight transfer, left arm not pulling through the line, sitting down in the downswing.

                  Weight transfer:
At setup you should favour your weight on the inside of the right foot and keep the right knee flexed inwards. Keep the right leg flexed inwards for the whole backswing. The flexed right knee will prevent you from swaying and overturning your hip turn. in the backswing. At the backswing position the weight should be on the right heel. When the downswing begins transfer your weight to the left side and check that your left leg is STRAIGHT at impact. Beware of lifting the head when straightening the left leg. No up or down movement of the head in the swing.
All the weight on the left heel at impact. If you achieve this you will keep your body position and release through the ball. Not sitting back and hitting it fat.

                  Left arm:
The power of the swing is in the left arm. Not the right. If the right hand works too hard you will also hit it fat. Pulling with the left arm promotes your body staying up and keeping your left shoulder square at impact.

                  Sitting down:
The straightening of the left leg at impact and weight transfer to the left side will eliminate this problem.

This is good sound advice. Now I have to try it out on the range.

I'll let you know how it goes.

i want to take back my drill of putting weight on inside of foot by golf ball under outside of foot..... look at this page for an explanation why.

                        All:

I have been practicing the advice that you guys have posted on why FAT shots occur and I must say that my iron play haved really improved. I am transfering my weight properly and I concentrate on the front of the ball, this has enabled me to hit down through the ball and take a proper divot. Now I've been practicing so much on my iron play that now my chipping has become problematic.

It always something, perhaps that is why we always come back
