Most golfers slice because their clubface is open. Because they want to stop slicing, they come 'over the top' to try and get the ball to go straighter.
The key is clubface control. Learn the proper neutral grip. Flat left wrist at the top of the backstroke. Strike the inside quarter if the ball and rotate the right palm over the left (while the left wrist remains flat). The wrists should 'kiss' past impact.
