  • why do

some instructors talk about level hip turn? in the set up we bend from the hips so the hips have primary axis tilt, well they rotate on this axis. So why do some say level hip turn or hips are level? what do they mean by this? In the swing the spne angle at address is established by the HIPS bending forward that creates the spine angle. now the hips should turn on the axis they are set on but if they turn LEVEL then they would have come out of their spine angle.

You are not rotating your belt line around your spine , it's more around your right then left legs. If your belt line becomes tilted and rocks the spine backward, the right arm jams into the right side of your body, where it becomes trapped and weak.

Think of a tilting belt line more as a lifting of the hips and straightening of the legs in the back and down swings, these lose your spine angle.

can you describe a little more please? in regards to the belt line, at address the buckle woudl be lower then the same point in the belt that is on the rear side. So on the back swing the right side would rise while the left side would lower, is that your take?
the way I see it is if you take an egg shaped disc that represents the hips and put a stick through the back of it. The stick would stick in the ground at a 25* angle or so. so this would tilt the disk down. when you rotate the disk, the back right side would be highest and the front right side would be lowest. The angle of the stick would not have changed, nor would the angle of the disc on the stick.

anyone know where to find any 3 dimensional diagrams on the hips during the golf swing?

        Shootin,

Try to think of the disc with two sticks, towards the right and one on the left of centre, these would represent your legs.

On the back swing you rotate more around the right stick, your spine is not still centred around the original axis. On the down swing you rotate back around the left stick.

g1, are you aware of any good websites or books taht deal with the biomechanics of the hip movements during the golf swing?

            hi cmays
i found the THE GOLFING MACHINE real heavy going and was i bit to deep for me, think it will confuse a lot of people it did me a bit, mine was ed 3. some of it is really good and easy to grasp but a lot of it is way to tech for me.

              HI Shootin.

"The 7 Laws of the Golf Swing" by Nick Price is excellent, the graphics in it are fantastic and he focuses strongly on the natural Bio-mechanics of the body.

Don't you think that what they mean by level is that once you've set your hips at address they should turn on the same plane throughout the swing? I don't think they need to be level with respect to the ground. Is that the confusion?

I think it can be easy to get sucked down into too much detail here. just imagine the belt line staying level or on the same plane, if you tilt it up or down as you rotate you will be throwing the spine off centre and removing knee flex.
