  • coil

    i have developed a good set up and can feel pressure in the right side on my backswing . but what causes coiling to fade before starting the downswing.
    i am getting good distance and accuracy but something feels amiss?
    any ideas people?

            Hi Slats

            Well a couple of things to try. You may be overswinging where you get to a point where youve got all that good coil and then you try and go a bit more with the arms or break the wrist

            You may also be letting the right knee straighten which is all too easy to do. A great way to feel and preserve coil is to feel like you really flex the knees at setup, almost to 45 degree bend. You'll really feel like youre pushing youre feet into the ground and youre whole base is more stable. Make sure you keep the weight in the middle of your feet as you do this though. Now turn and you'll really really feel the coil up the leg and find it harder to straighten the right knee

            To prove it, do the opposite and coil with no flex in the knees. Feel any resistance now?

              in trying to figure out the golf swing one of the misconceptioons that I used to have was to keep the right knee flex the same through the backswing. if you do this you can run into problems because your hips wont pivot right. In david ledbetters book on hogan, hogan shows a drill where at address he keeps a shaft just outside his right leg. The importance of the right leg is the angle of it stays the same, not the flex. Hogan showed that you rotate back and still keep the right leg off the shaft, this stops the hips from swaying. But the knee flex will lesson a bit until the sit down move occurs. If you stand up straight and twist your hips both legs will alter in amount of flex, this is correct hip movement. If you focus on keeping the right knee flext the same while standing up and twisting your hips then your hip rotation will be hindered.

                IMO the "coil" you should feel is not the "x factor" and has nothing to do with the hips and shoulder rotation directly. the tightness you should feel is your hands wanting to go up (don't lose spine angle) and the weight on your left side wanting to go down.

                    Hi slater170 sounds like you are swaying rather than coiling if this is the case you are breaking your arms at the top of the back swing and your right foot is leaving the ground.shorten your backswing to the 9 o clock position place a club running parralell to your toes and at the 9 o clock position your left arm should be parralell to this.reherse this looking at your image in a mirror or patio door at home and hold the position for a few seconds to feel what its like.also get someone to hold down your left foot while you do this.
