I Do Ok On The Course But I Go To This Driving Range Close To Work Sometimes During Lunch And My Shots Are Horrible. Mostly Chunking Or Hitting Thin/toppin, Loss Of Distance. I Went Today To Practice Hitting My Hybrid OFF THE TEES And It Was Terrible. The Tee Boxes On This Range Are Sloping Downhill And You Are Hitting To The Range Surface About Ten Feet Below The Tee Boxes. I Hit This Hybrid Extremely Well On The Golf Course!! I'M HOPING IT WAS THE RANGE I AM USING!!

A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.
I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.

Re: I Hate Driving Ranges
If I could do well on the course, and horribly on the range, I'd never visit the range.

Re: I Hate Driving Ranges
I get uncomfortable at some ranges...others feel great. Try another place and assess again. Also, try real grass ranges. Might pay a little more, but for the sake of tests, worth it...for now. You also just might not like to practice. Not enough challange in it maybe. If so, put some in it and make it a real game with real scores.

practise should be about quality not quantity.
are you sure you have enough time at lunch to practise properly?
if you are rushing to hit a bucket of balls in your alloted lunchtime then i think poor shots are the nett result

Re: I Hate Driving Ranges
I visit the range once a week on average and I agree that you need to use a range that you are comfortable with. Some have poor quality or worn balls. some have hard worn mats and bad layouts etc.
Anyone who aspires to improve their game, keep it at a good standard or need to rectify faults, require some regular range practice IMHO. You should not be trying to change anything during course play.
The main problems people get at ranges (And I get my problems there) are:
> Hitting too many balls.
> Hitting balls too fast in succession.
> Using a club too many times.
> Lack of planning and setting goals for the session.
> Not replicating course play.
> Repetitively using a driver trying to hit 300 yards +
> Not taking regular breaks to reflect.
If you are happy with the range environment and plan your practice then your time should be well repaid on the course.
Finally: Only perfect practice makes perfect.Last edited by BrianW; 11-10-2006, 11:58 AM.

Re: I Hate Driving Ranges
Guys,
My Driving range has real grass to hit off of, but because of winter approaching they put out the rubber mats. I hate them. They will go back to real grass as soon as the winter rye comes in. Some times I do really well at the range and some times not. Although nobody there is watching ,it does make me think people are and I get uncomfortable at times. Range time is needed unless You have time and the $ to play 4-5 times per week. Ahhhh to win the lottery and be able to play 5 days per week.

Re: I Hate Driving Ranges
My favourite range was set in countryside in Yorkshire, no nets penning you in on all sides. Just woodland either side and open fields at the back.
It was flat, well maintained with loads of decent targets and the option to hit from grass as well as decent mats.
On the other hand I have been to ranges with mats that should have been removed ten years ago, mud (no grass!) and high netting all around.
I know where I could and have practiced more effectively!
I have also tried cramming practice in to a lunch hour, by the time I get there and back I am left with 40 mins. It takes me 1 hour to hit 40 balls (which is my max for any session) so I feel rushed and the quality practice just isn't there.
Work through lunch - leave early and find a decent range where you can spend a whole hour hitting 40 balls.
