  • Cobra 3 (iron) Hvbrid swing like an iron for wood...

I have been reading reviews of the Cobra Baffler 3 (iron hybrid) some say it must be swung like an iron, and others insist the swing should be more sweeeing like a wood. I haven't had the opportunity to hit the driving range yet, but I noticed in other literature that the lower irons should be hit with a sweeping kind of swing.

Irons, by design, are NOT meant to be swept. Hybrids, by design, are meant to replace irons.

    If A=B, and B=C, then A=?

I have been going to the manufactures’ websites looking for some info on this; they build the clubs they might have some suggestions on how they ought to be hit. I have been thinking about it, and it may depend upon your size, your type of swing, the length of the club and head design. A fair-way wood type of head isn’t going to take a divot… I have heard in some places, where the soil is hard, it is customary not to take a divot.

Indeed one of the greatest players in golf advises that he hits down on his irons, but he SWEEPS his longer irons.

Don't get me wrong, James. I'm not saying you can't sweep a hybrid. I'm not saying you can't sweep a long iron. I'm saying they're designed to be struck with a descending blow.

          hi james
i have the cobra baffler and i position the ball same as i would for the corresponding iron.
i have my hands slightly ahead at address and i employ a long wide and easy swing taking a very shallow divot.
hybrids look like woods but definately should be hit like an iron!

Thanks for your posts guys. Much appreciated. I finally had a chance to hit the Cobra Baffler - a very nice club. I swung it like an iron and it worked beautifully. I am surprised there isn't more info online about how to hit a hybrid. There are so many different kinds of hybrids that you wonder if they are all designed to be hit the same way. I finally found an article in 2004, Golf Digest, Butch Harmon wrote that for hitting the hybrids...

Take the club back low and make a smooth, comfortable turn. On the downswing, don't think of hitting down sharply on the ball. You want to make more of a sweeping-type swing, hitting down on the ball very slightly. You should take a tiny divot, if any divot at all.

Essentially you do hit down on the ball, as you could with a long iron.
