  • recovery of timing and tempo

Allthough i am not having a crisis with my ball striking, i am experiencing a loss of tempo and timing. It tends to be either too strong coming into the ball resulting in loosing balance at the finish, or too slow on the downswing and not getting a full and solid strike. ironically the problem seems to be worse with the wedge, 9, etc. The mid irons, 5, 4, no great problem here. Can anyone explain or give me an idea what I should be doing to recover ?

    Thanks, Robert

Yes, go back to half swings while concentrating on loose hands and easy swing while keeping the hands ahead. Try punting shots with half swings where you basically just hit knock downs.
When your timing returns, go for longer backswing while keeping the slow backswing and hands ahead routine.

take a swing and focus on balance and then tell yourself/your mind, in the real swing to feel that balance that you felt in the practice swing. Focus on feeling in balance and you will not have to think of tempo. Balance is a natural body instinct. Hogan, greatest ballstriker of all time I might add, said himself that tempo is not a major concern, but hogan said the purpose of the set up was so you could swing in balance. So why did he mention balance more then tempo

        hi robert
have you tried "tour tempo" i found it to help me a lot in getting my timing to repeat time after time and it also seemed to relax you as you think of the timing and no other swing thought.
works with putting and short game too. i find it a big help with my putting and always count when i putt.

            hi robert
its a book and a video cd that worked out that all good playes have a 3 to 1 swing , tiger is a 24/8 and hogan is a 21/7, monty is a 21/8 and garcia a 25/7.
the closer you get to a 3 to 1 swing tempo the better to hit the ball.
i though this unlikly when i heard it but i bought the book on amazon and was suprised and it did make a lot of sense.

            there web site www.TourTempo.com.
have a look ? it was on here i heard about it. maybe have a look back and you see some thinks others have said about it.
i found it was good and i'd put it behind, hogans fundemental and dave plez short game and putting bible,s as books that hane helped my game most.
if you want to know any more let me know.
the cd not much good but books ok, get you to swing in time with some beeps, 21/7 or 24/8 or 27/9 or even a slow 30/10.

put your feet together and hit a few shots it will get your tempo back as long as you sty balanced.

                Hi Robert,

The Dave Pelz Short Game Bible has helped me with these finesse wedge shots. The most important factor with wedges is to ensure you are accelerating through impact, try taking a 7:30 - 9.00 or 10:30 backswing with different clubs for varied distances but always finish with a high follow through.

As Takinitdeep suggests use dead hands. Ball centered mid-way between the ankles and left foot flared out 30 deg. Make a full wrist cock and no body coil, allow your torso and legs to turn fully through the shot ending with a balanced finish, up on right toe and chest towards target..

He suggests thinking "Suwissssssh" going back and "Swish" coming down for tempo, but I guess what ever you prefer is fine.
