  • Please critique my golf swing

I am new to golf and I have been playing for approx 4 months. I really want to improve as I have fallen in love with this game. I have filmed my swing from 2 angles:

    Down the line - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVOnVHAbo6M

    Face on - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5e7sbEQtNc

Please feel free to critique my swing and advise accordingly ie faults and solutions/drills.
I play off approx 20 and I would describe my game as inconsistent.

    Thanx in advance.

    Hello:

At set-up you may want to have your hands slighly further from your body. Not much but maybe an inch or two. Try to get into a better posture with your rear end sticking out and your back a little straighter. You don't need to be rigid but you seem a little slouched. These slight adjustments can be seen in the down the line view.

On the head on footage, again with the set-up you may want to be a little more tilted away from the target, not stacked on top of the ball. Remember the right hand is sitting below the left so you should have that same tilt to your spine which will automatically tilt the shoulders correctly. The feel here is that your left hip is slighty higher than the right. This will feel a little uncomfortable at first but this is essential to being able to turn and maintail your posture throughout the swing. Finally watch your left knee drifting in too far toward your right knee on the backswing. You want to maintain some space there which will build torque into the lower body action. You can practice this by using an inflated ball (about the size of a bowling ball) between your knees and keep it there during practice swings.

Overall your arm positions are good, not tense and the right elbow is in a good position to deliver the club back inside on the downswing. Also you seem to begin the downswing with a nice syncronized shift of the lower half leading.

    Good work.

not bad for some one playing for 4 months well done. I can see a number of things that you can improve on but lets start with the most basic and most important.
I believe that the most important part of any golf swing are the grip and the posture, it seems to me that you can improve on your grip and posture by having a few golf lessons with a good pro. that is why your hand seem to take the club back not your shoulders, arms and hands working together. your posture / stance is the reason you are swaying instead of turning your shoulders / hips.
it is very easy to get lost with golfing jargon and learn from many different players but having a few lessons at this stage will help you for the rest of your golfing life!
I see a lot of players using £300 drivers and hit it 180 yards in the wrong direction. if they spend half of that on lessons they could hit an umberela straighter and longer. good luck.

Re: Please critique my golf swing

        Thanks for the advice.

So in summary - I need to work on my posture/grip. Are there any drills to help me with posture and grip and does this mean everything else in my golf swing is ok ? eg Is my hip turn correct, Am I transferring weight properly, Is swing path correct etc.
I really need to know what elements of my swing are working and which elements are not.

        Thanks again

The golf swing action works with cause and effect. That means, that you should concentrate on one problem at a time.

Find some pictures of pro's in their address position. Try to replicate them: stand sideways in front of your mirror and practice the address position. Because the golf swing is cause and effect, fundamentals are so important! It all starts from the basics.

You can find plenty of instruction for a proper grip on the internet and in almost every golf book you can find.

Yes fix the posture. Your arms are a bit loose also - may try to keep the right arm a bit straighter.

There is too much action in the legs - where can you get your power if all the legs are doing is folding and bending? You also need a to have a firm base to hit off against. There is no stability - one lesson is to try swinging with totally straight legs and feel the pressure and power built up in the middle of the body.

put you feet on either side of the bucket the range balls come in and hit ball. this will stabilize your base.
