  • Where do you Practice?

I have been reading the Pelz "Short Game Bible" and want to apply some of the yardage measurement routines but don't have an appropriate place to do it. Has anyone tried to do this off the course or range? Where do you practice such that you know how far your shots are flying in the air?

I've got 60 yards from the end of my pool shed to my back property. I use that.

Before I had that, I'd do it at the range. I'd get some strange stares taking these little swings and lasering off the balls after hitting 5 or so. (Or hitting to flags, and trying to figure out the distances.)

I have several schools in my area with fields large enough to practice. Just have to go in off hours when it's empty. Usually early mornings. Weekends, of course, are best. I do go to the range sometimes, but If I had to pay for every ball I hit, I'd be broke.

Lately I've been playing nine holes only. I'm a range rat myself. But I bought a sack of cheap old range balls which I bring whenever I go out of town and hit them wherever and whenever I can, at the beach, a large empty field, etc.

I'm quite lucky and I live on a farm (2200acres).

I have a watered area in the paddock beside the house where I practice my pitching.

I have 10m, 12m and 15m pegged out for chipping. Rarely use this now though.

I have 30m, 40m and 50m pegged out for pitching. Try and use this 3 time a week.

I do my chipping at my local club 2m, 4, 6m pegged out from the chipping area. I use my 7, 9, pw, sw and lw from each point. After this I'll hit 10 balls from the practice sand bunker. Again, try and do this 3 times per week.

          I don't practice my putting - I know I should.
