Hi Guys

I regularly play with a guy (we will call him mr X) and yesterday I took some footage of his swing, no its not me before you ask but I would be interested to hear what you thought. I know what I think, ive been telling him for ages but he doesnt practice so it is kind of hard to implement

Wow,

Where do we start...............he's a typical big guy using brute force instead of technic.

I can only suggest he gets some lessons, although he hits the ball, everything is out of time, to much arms, no rotation,ball position, stands to far away etc etc.

Main thing is he enjoys his game and it sounds like your having fun and if it's not serious then just enjoy your fun.

Just remember etiquite like shouting 'four' when he hits them big hooks.

If I had to pick the biggest problem and potential power leak, it is the way he collapses his left arm in the back swing and his right in the down swing.

Well how about:

Back is too rounded at address
Stands too far away from the ball at address
Left knee collapses at the top of the back swing
Over swings the back swing
Right foot stays planted on impact rather than rising
Hips do not rotate so that the arms and wrists are used to flip the hands through impact

Apart from that it's fine!

Actually he reminds me of a friend of mine who was a real powerhouse but only used his arms to swing and lost so much distance.

If you want this guy to take lessons, I'd appeal to his ego and tell him that if he did he'd add on another 50 to 80 yards on his drives.

Good to see you back Bloodredsun. I think all your observations are pretty much what I was expecting. But as Mr x says "i just play for the enjoyment and every dog has his day"

Hi Leepy,

When it all boils down to it, all that counts is that he enjoys his golf. Many of us are never going to be scratch golfers and that never stops us from playing. My friend Chippa, who I mentioned has a similar swing, loved playing golf and was great fun to play with but there were times when playing with him was like watching a 4 hour car crash. If his timing was off then he would have a nightmare.

If your friend wants to get better or even just more consistent, then he needs some lessons and also needs to increase his flexibility.

How far does he usually hit the ball?

A lot of his weight stays on his rear foot, if he would follow-through he would have a better outcome.

Here is a question and I hope it is not divisive.

Would you rather take lessons and have a technically sound swing or would you rather be self-taught and have a technically unsound swing – an ugly swing – BUT score better over all in the game of golf – say by 6 strokes…..

I have been taking lessons all summer and may take them in the winter and will take the again next summer – and I need everyone of em. However, I also know some scratch golfers who look technically sound – how have had very few if any lessons. I don’t know how “schooled” Dan Daly is…. I remember him talking about lessons confusing his game, and another pro – working with But Harmen – and until that point she had no lessons.

I would rather have a learned swing and a higher score, although I have a lot of respect for those who have done it on their own and achieved great results.

Hi James,

You have touched on a very important point about lessons, the important thing is to find a pro that delivers what you want, but first you must look at yourself are you a feel learner or visual......??? It's very important in Golf to know,
I am a visual learner show me my swing and I can understand what I need to do to improve, yet try to explain and your wasting your time.

Some players are feel players, they try the new move feel what it was like and then learn.

The guys you talk about having no lessons are all visual learners, they have watched other people and simply mimiced their movements and then simply never thought about it again, these are usually the true pros, they play the game not play swings.


Can you think for a minute how good at golf you would be if you played it like you drive a car, you grip the steering wheel so lightly and perform all the movements without thought, yet rarely ever make a mistake, yet when you had driving lessons you struggled to think of all the different things you had to do.........................Golf is just the same.

At the end of the day...........its night no no at the end of the day its all about getting the small white spherical thing into the hole in the least amount of shots, who cares if it is as ugly as a bag of eels, just look at Jim Furyk and some of the seniors on the champions tour. Ugly with a capital F!!

Could be my swing. I have moved the ball much closer and now have a very upright swing, trying to emulate Furyk. I love watching him. This was my first year of golf though and I'm going to get some lessons this winter.

Robert, its a combination of everything really, severe hooks, slices, pushes right, pulls left and occasionaly straight. I dont think he will take lessons, i have been trying to point out a few things on the course though.

James, hes not the longest in the world but then again hes not overly short, I think he usually hits 2 clubs more than me, sometimes three.

But he always plays with a smile on his chops, unless its hammering down with the wetstuff ofcourse!
