Irons I focus on the front of the ball which at least for me produces downward strike hitting the ball first then taking a divot.
Woods: Driver I absolutely focus on the back lower half of the ball to give me the sweeping upwards motion; the ball launches low to high and skips and rolls when it hits the ground.
3 wood: not so much upward sweep as driver and more focus on center of the ball contact to allow the loft to do its work.
One more thing, I happen to like the hands ahead except for driver where they are about even.
