  • Swing Radius/Early Wrist Break

I have heard several noted instructors say the early wrist break (early wrist cock) on the backswing is not good because it shortens the radius of the swing. They advocate a late wrist cock on the backswing. However, I do not understand why an early wrist break should adversely affect the radius of the swing because the left arm (for righties) provides the radius and a straight left arm is the same length whether an early or late wrist break is employed. I would be very interested in your thoughts on this topic.

I'd say technically yes the radius is dependent on the shoulder and arms but practically the degree of wrist hinge affects the 'feel' of how wide you are stretching that arc.

It doesn't really matter so long as you maintain the proper motion of the arms.

The problem with an early wrist cock is that is may be followed by a collapse of the arms as the club reaches the top of the swing.
