I Have Had A Major Problem With My Swing Bottoming Early In The Downswing Causing Fat Shots Or Weak/topped Shots. This Is No Matter How I Adjust My Ball Position. I Then Looked In A Mirror And Noticed My Left Side Is Swaying And Moving Away From My Original Position. If I Concentrate On Having The Feeling That The Slight Majority Of My Weight Is On My Lead Foot At Address This Seems To Eliminate This Sway Of My Right Side And I Make Better Contact. Were My Shots Fat Because Of Improper Weight Shift Or The Lateral Movement Of My Hips On Backswing?

Re: Swing Bottoming Out Well Behind Ball
Depends on the club and the shot. IMO, 60/40 favoring the front foot for pitches, chips, and such, 50/50 for most other irons, and 60/40 favoring the back foot for driver.
Nine times out of ten hitting behind the ball is from hitting with the weight "stuck" on the back foot. Lots of potential causes.....reverse pivot, excessive hip sliding, locking out the back knee, "spinning out" the hips, good weight shift back but poor weight shift forward, etc.

Re: Swing Bottoming Out Well Behind Ball
Sounds as if your swing has some basic problems. Grounding well behind the ball certainly suggests weight staying on the right side and some lateral shift of the head. I suppose if you sway enough on the backswing, you could also be struggling to 'get back to the ball' regardless of weight shift (harder to imagine, though).
You must eliminate your sway! However, your quick fix of trying to keep more weight on the left side will almost certainly result in a reverse pivot, lack of power and so on.
Instead, work on a proper take away and wind-up without swaying!

Re: Swing Bottoming Out Well Behind Ball
Another possible solution that I struggled with just recently after taking 3 months off playing could be this.
Not staying on plane, causing you to strike down towards the ball instead of through it. When you swing, notice the position of your right elbow (for right handers), if it is staying compact with your body (should be nearly touching your right side in the takeaway) then this is not your problem...If your right arm is getting far away from your body, this could be causing you to come off plane (most likely over the top), causing you to come down on the ball instead of through.
One look in the mirror should provide your answer as it did mine.
After I realized this I had a much better recoil in my right side and started striking the ball true once again.

Re: Swing Bottoming Out Well Behind Ball
more suggestions,
ball could be too far back and you have to hang back to hit it.
also, if your body is not accelerating through the shot then you will release the clubhead early, at impact try to be in a position of Gregs wall drill

Re: Swing Bottoming Out Well Behind Ball
Try this Drill for creating the correct feel and understanding of weight transfer and transition :
Set up with a narrow stance and place the ball just forward of your left foot. With a mid iron make a smooth back swing to the top, just as you are about to reach the top of the backswing take a step to the left with the left foot so that it moves forward of the ball, continue with the downswing allowing the right side to hit through to a balanced finish.
Do this drill a number of times and pick up on the wave like action as you turn through. It will give the correct feel of the weight transferring to the left side then the right side following through.
