    HI indianagolf
i solved my tempo problem by practising the pump drill and counting out in my head.
    it goes "1 and a 2 and 3 and a 4"
    1 = parallel in bs 2 = the top 3 = impact 4 = end of followthrough.
    works perfectly for me.
    hope that helps

Try to separate the difference between Tempo and Rhythm.

Tempo is the speed you swing which will be tied to your personality and movements, you will find it hard to alter the speed you swing a club.

Rhythm is the beat of your swing, the difference between the back and down swing. This is where you can make a difference, get a nice 3 to 1 or 2:1 rhythm that is smooth and well balanced.

      How about Suuuwish , Swish

        Dear Indiana,

One of the old tried and true phrases and still one of the best is to bring the club back "low and slow". For me, it's so easy to get that backswing started way too quick and you will have problems from then on.

Repeat the phrase to yourself before starting the swing and see if it helps.

Another thing that I do to keep from bringing it back to quick is to make sure I have a very soft grip on the club. Often times, I will experiment a little and loosen it to the point to where I feel like if I bring the club back to quick it will fly out of my hands. You'd be amazed at how many nice shots you hit with a very light grip. Remember is has been described as light enough to hold a live bird or a tube of toothpaste.

        Low and slow..baby....

          from "Tour Tempo" -

Swing - set - through in waltz time (123,223,323, etc)

On swing one, two _ start for the backswing after you say one
set - three - set your wrists after you say thre
through - impact on one again and finish two, three

tempo is the time taken from takeaway to impact.Rhythm is how you move within that time. You can have a slow delibrate backswing and a fast downswing which would give you a slow tempo,if you had this type of golf swing and related it to your personality you would have a split personality. and need help Ernie and Goosen have quick tempos buts thats why they are both hyper The late great flamboyant payne stewwart had the slowest tempo yet hit the ball a mile with his FAST club head speed !

I beg to differ with the given interpretations.

Tempo and Rythym are two different things. Timing equates to tempo and rythym.

My understanding is that one is the speed of the swing. Finding this speed, ie, tempo, allows your mechanics of your swing to fall in their place, ie, rythym.

If one swings too fast then the order of the swing can't fall into place.

I find that I swing better when only thinking 80 percent. When I don't try smack the lil white pill.

The time to generate speed in the swing is after initiating the first motion of the downswing. Accelaration say, must occur from the chest towards and through the ball.

              What are your thoughts?

rhythm equates to timing .Timing relates to speed.TEMPO RELATES TO ABSOLUTE NOTHING!!!

When a golfer gets over the initial desire to swing as fast as possible they will settle down to a tempo that they will find very difficult to change, as I said earlier it will be intrinsicly linked to their personality.

When I say the rhythm dictates the beat it does not mean the two parts have to be at the same speed, it means they are relative. Look at Ernie Els and Tom Watson, they have different natural tempo's but both use a good similar rhythm, while staying balanced.

                    Re: Swing tempo help

                    Hi Brian,

I agree the swing speed is determined by one's personality.

My understanding is that one has to swing at a speed that enables the mechanics of the swing to fall into place. If one swings way too fast for their personality, then, the swing can't fall into place.

I may be wrong, and if I am, I accept that. I just thought that the terms we have used for tempo and rythym together, equate to timing.

                      indiana,

Personally If I am having rhythm, tempo, timing issues for me all I have to do is take a swing and at the end make sure I am in balance. If I am unbalanced then I swing again and keep doing so untill I find balance. At that point my tempo, rhythm, or whatever you call it is usually good. I used to do a drill of saying 1,2,3 as I swing for tempo purposes, but now I find it easier to just focus on balance. Others may do it different so you have to find what works for you. Good luck in the search

                        Re: Swing tempo help

I admit being wrong when i said tempo means nothing. Its the time taken to swing the club. What i meant to say is it means nothing to the game of golf. However long or quick it takes to execute a shot so be it,thats your tempo .Try to speed up or slow down that tempo and it will lead to timing and rythme problems [within a small ratio]if its natural..Trying to swing the club at the same tempo for all clubs is also WRONG you would have a mechanical swing with a set yardage and no feel for the game[within a small ratio].Although many a golfer has a slow delibarte golf swing that gets them in the right positions for maximum club speed ,its not natural but works for them.[the low and slow theory].As for personality well i only have to look to my boss he is a total bag of nerves he walks quick talks quick and smokes way to much, but he has a wonderfull smooth swing with a slow tempo which he has learned over the years.I dont think you can learn a personality just mybe put an act on!

                          Re: Swing tempo help

An instructor recently told me the way to a good tempo is using this count:

                          1,2,3 and 4.

1,2,3 is the backswing. "And" is beginning the move forward, the weight shift to the left side, and 4 is the downswing. The speed should be slow, but I guess that is relative to individual golfers.

I too had a tendency to make a fast backswing and quick directional change into the downswing. This new technique of a slight pause at the top - along with a slow take away(tempo), has produced really good results for me. Many more solid hits on the clubface, and predictable accuracy.
