  • Speed at the bottom

I'm finally starting to understand and benefit from saving my speed for the bottom of my swing while trying to maintain the wrist cock for as long as possible. Sometimes I'll block an otherwise beautiful shot about 20 degrees right. What I can't figure out is whether this is because my wrists aren't strong enough yet ("...I wish I had three right hands!" Ben Hogan) or because my hands and wrists aren't relaxed enough. Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Jerry

    Re: Speed at the bottom

it could be that in trying to hold the wrist cock, which IMO is something that shoudl happen and you should not have to try to do, you are not allowing your left wrist/forearm to rotate. kind of sounds like you are trying to pull the butt end of the club down the target line, and that would cause exactly what you are talking about. long story short, make sure your left forearm rotates so your knuckles face the ground, in the direction of the target, at impact.

In the extreme, pulling the butt end of the club down the target line with no release of the hands will cause blocks. I suspect you may want to keep your hands as relaxed as possible to allow the release to happen.
As far as trying to hold onto the angle, you may be overdoing it.
If you watched the long drive champions this past weekend, they all try to stay flat through the bottom of the swing by keeping the left ear down through impact and of course by staying behind the ball so the clubhead can whip through behind them.
