hi everyone i need some help to get my backswing on a better plane going back i have tryed for ages to get the club shaft pointing half way between my feet and the ball at the mid point of my backswing but every time i analyise it on video the club shaft points miles out side the ball at that point in my backswing it looks so flat then when i get the club to the top it points way across the line i guess thats to do with the flat backswing i guess any help would be appreciated

To get a better understanding of where the club should be at the end of the takeaway:

Address the ball as normal then raise your arms to waist high without altering your wrist angle. Now make a 90 deg shoulder turn to the right, you will now be at the correct position at the end of the take away. If you now allow your arms to rotate and lift a little more so that the club is at the halfway position to the top, the shaft will point to the position you are seeking.

Currently you must be rolling your wrists through the takeaway, this is what points the shaft beyond the ball line. Keep the relationship between the clubface and your body square throughout the takeaway.

I have another major flaw in my swing that you may be able to help me with when i look at my swing on video i retain my spine angle from address to the top of my backswing really well but from about half way down to impact my body just straightains up and at impact i am just standing up on the shot no tilt in my back it looks so horrible i cant beleive how i can play to an 8 handicap with such a rubbish impact position i think if i could sort this problem out i could take my game on to another level this season and get to catagory 1 status or better hope you can help mate

When I say you are rolling your wrists I mean you are allowing your wrists and forearms to rotate clockwise during the takeaway, thus putting the clubface out of position. Check the position of the clubface and your wrists at the end of the takeaway, the leading edge should be pointing directly upwards and your wrists should not be rotated. Try the drill I mentioned earlier.

Regarding your straightening up problem. Work on maintaining the flex in your right knee throughout the swing, feel as if you are pushing down on your feet and knees as you reach the top and into the down swing, get a feeling of being squat. Rotate around your spine angle.
