Many golfers pull their head up to a perpendicular alignment to the ground too early because that is how we are used to viewing objects. You can and should train yourself to watch the initial stages of your ball flight with the 'head resting on the pillow'. If you where to straighten up the head too early your spine goes up as well.
Another very important aspect of this is the action of the hips. By shifting slightly with the left hip to start the downswing, an angle is created which allows the right elbow to come in close to the right hip on a clear inside path to the ball. This is why good players have their hips open at impact and the shoulders more square to the target line. The hips have lead the way.
And don't forget the golden rule. The left wrist is straight at impact so the right wrist must be slightly cupped at impact. all good ballstrikers have this look at impact.
