  • Dominant Body Part

Is there a body part you guys focus on when swinging? Normally, I try not to focus on any body part and have a sort of 'one-piece' swing but recently, I tried focusing on my biceps as a source of power (especially during the downswing) and got some crisper shots.

Could this just be psychological? Or is it some sort of 'golf move'?

Some of you may have tried this already... if not, check it out soon.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I don't want to do this because of the ramifications and it seems to be working for you, but...

IMO this would be completely psycological, because I don't think the bicepts can produce any power in a golf swing, at least during the downswing.

However, by focussing on something almost completely unrelated to the golf swing you are in effect clearing your mind of swing thoughts, which IS extremely helpful when executing a shot. This is the main concept behind "clearkeys".

In the back swing you do a right arm curl and that gets your right arm/elbow to 90*. is this active or passive, well that is up to the golfer. the right arm curls by using the bicep. some may need to think about it, some may not. then in the downswing you straighten this right arm, this uses the tricep, active or passive is your choice,
bottom line is whatever works for you

As Shootin said , if it works for you.

I try to keep my swing thought soley on the target, I fix it's image in my mind. I think filling the mind with anything else during the swing will cause problems, the swing is the time for muscle memory. The time to use swing thoughts is during practice.

If anything I would suggest considering the right hand in the downswing would be good, that's where you generate power, the backswing only positions the club and body in preperation for the downswing.

            Re: Dominant Body Part

Since you brought this up, I got to thinking, I do have body parts I think of, during setup I am very conscious of my grip and eye line, eye line especially because I have a bad habit of allowing my head to tilt to the right, not good because it throws off my eye line to the right, your eyes really need to be parallel to the target line just like the feet, hips, and shoulders. Once the swing starts I think exclussively about my feet, yep you heard right, my feet, I want to feel the weight moving. Other then that, don't think much about anything, swing is moving so fast, I don't think you have much control over it, IMO, you are a product of your preshot and setup, and tempo.

Ha ha , great tip, but not so sure about the example!!

My concentration is on routine. If we have a routine then all our good points in our swing should happen without thinking about it

You are putting yourself in some pretty tall company there my man. Also, Helen's son is an excellent player, he is well taught and doesn't have the flaws you mention.

CMAYS, I honestly dont know what you are on about. Firstly, I do know what the rectum is, and was trying to be lighthearted in my referral to it.

Secondly, I never posted a swing of my own or my son, so you are obviously mixing me up with some other site member. I intend to post my swing in the near future and will welcome all criticism, be it constructive or damning.

                        Cmays,

Do you honestly believe that someone should be focusing on their rectum during the golf swing or that it is the dominant body part during the swing?

Good fundamentals are important at address and from there I like to teach the swing is feel since every person in the universe has two built in swing planes.

I am not going to fight with anyone on this issue, Helen makes a clear statement on the subject and it is how the butt that matches the body type and where it is placed at address.

Please forget I said anything and if people want to learn more they can do a Google or Yahoo search on the butt in the golf swing.

You guys may want to send Helen an e-mail and tell her that her system is no good that the butt, shoulders, turn and balance has no role in the golf swing. Tell her what to do so she can change her instruction.
I did'n't say anything about the Butt, shoulders, turn or balance, or Helen's system. only your reference to the rectum. The original thread asked if there were any part of the body people focused on when swinging.

I think about my rectum when I'm on 17th tee and 2 down on a twenty dollar nasau, usually thinking about how tight it is getting...lol

P.s. I won't even go into what happens when your partner decides to press the bet.....
