  • The Slice

During the past year I have developed a really bad slice while using my driver. I have been told that my shoulders are not square but turned towards target at impact. Causing a outside to in swing path. Does anyone have any suggestions or drills to help me correct this.

    Thanks

    Re: The Slice

    Hi,

Starting the downswing by throwing out the right shoulder is a common cause of an out to in swing, resulting in a slice or sometimes a duck hook.

You need to start your downswing with your hips, leave your shoulders fully turned and your arms at the top. Rotate your hips back to a similar position they were at address while ensuring your weight transfers to the front foot, your right shoulder will naturally drop bringing your arms, hands and club down to around waist high. Now you can release the club into the ball on an inside path while continuing to rotate your hips forward , they should be open by around 30 degrees when you strike the ball. keep your right shoulder moving under your chin while maintaining the same spine angle you had at address. Finally let your arms extend down the target line towards the target before they pull up and over your left shoulder with your belt buckle pointing just left of target.

A bit of a lengthy reply but I hope it assists with your understanding of how to counter an out to in and over the top swing.

      Re: The Slice

Wouldn't shoulders turned to the target be square to the target line?

Or do you mean that your chest is pointing towards the target at impact (open shoulders?)

Or do you mean your chest hasn't reached square (closed shoulders?)

Yes, my chest is turned towards target is what I meant.

        Thanks.

Nothing wrong with open shoulders at impact - unless you're actively using your arms and hands to hit at the ball, in which case you'll be way, way outside.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the swing to make a solid suggestion.

I may using my arms to hit at the ball. Is there a way to determine this with out a video of my swing?

              hi rac400
i used to be the worst slicer in the world!
i tried every drill, half a dozen anti slice drivers but to no avail until one of the guys sent me the pump drill video!
you can find it by googling michelle dube golf swing drills
it has really helped me to stop swinging OTT and i have now have good tempo in my swing.
now i only hit the odd fade per round rather than every other shot.
ive incorporated it into my preshot routine as well as practising it at the range!
              give it a go
let mr know how you get on
