  • 150 to the pin and I'm skulling and small ivots

I worked on my 100 and in game, pitch, chip and putting (Pelz) and it works. Now my 150 full swing 6i is all over the place. I block it, fade and slice, thin shots. I'm thinking I need to keep my right wrist in a cocked position longer. I feel handsy trying to finesse these shots. Of course on the range it always works itself out. Last week the mid irons cost me about 8 strokes.

    Help please!

My first thought having read your post is to say if you know your 6 Iron is your 150 club, then trust this knowledge and don't think about it any more. Having a 150 club and the confidence to grab it and KNOW you will hit it just that distance is a very good thing...

My second thought is to say when you are hitting your middle irons, just swing easy. If you are thinking about your wrists or your hands whilst standing over a shot on the course during a round, this can't be good. This is the last place to be actively thinking about swing mechanics. On the range is the place for practicing.

Maybe you could simply try to focus on your targets and hitting them...

This may help you to forget about swing mechanics during your rounds...

Go to the course and drop one ball at 150 and hit it in.. Then walk up get it and walk back and hit it in again. There is period of time between getting your practice game near your real game and I'd say your in it.

I found the one ball approach the quickest way to get over the mental demons of only having one shot that counts. If we are talking 'range golf' (driving to target, hitting an approach shot, chipping 30 yards) I'd be a pro but there is a mental barrier there when you are on the course.

Personally I think this is what your problem is if you are hitting 99 out of a 100 in the sweet spot on the range but having troubles on the course. Takes time and what goes on in your head is more important on the course than your swing.

Pelz states that his technique is only for the finesse wedge shot from 100 yards in and you will need a different swing for longer shots.

You will have to get used to using two different methods, one for under and one for over 100 yards. The finesse shot removes body coil, it wants you to keep your arms, shoulders and the club rotating in alignment throughout the swing. It also wants you to have dead hands and a weak grip. Sounds like you have let this dominate your full swing where you should be using separation between the hips and shoulders, maybe a stronger grip and manipulation of the forearms and wrists.

Thanks for your responses. I'll use the tips this weekend but first to the range to get familiar with the feel of using the right hand cocked properly and using more body turn.
