  • A lesson learned - the importance of correct posture

In an effort to move on from my 13 handicap, I have bitten the bullet and finally taken some lessons. Had the first lesson last night at the range, instructor had me hitting balls and video'd the whole thing.

He said there wasn't too much wrong with the swing but there was a whole lot wrong with my posture, he then put me in a position which really pushed my backside out so far I felt like a bloody baboon! - he also shifted my weight backwards so that my balance was more between the ball of the foot and the heels.

I felt pretty uncomfortable in this new position but strangely - I then started to hit shots which were more powerful and solid (and accurate) - I started to think, this guy might have something?

Then he put me on one of those Explanar contraptions - I felt a bit like a beginner and was a bit embarassed! but - I swung the weighted roller back and forward and noted that the explanar made me have a slightly more upright swing.

I then went back to hitting 7 irons using the new posture and a slightly more upright swing courtesy of the explanar and - bingo! it all clicked into place, lovely solid shots with all clubs and increased distance.

I have heard many people say that lessons are the worst thing you can do for your game - my experience so far, is just the opposite.

Lets hope it all transfers to the course this weekend!

    Hi John,

That's great, here's for them staying long and straight for you.

Your post goes to remind us that those three little gems: Posture, Balance and Alignment can so easily be ignored or forgotten in a quest for distance through speed and strength alone.

Yes great to hear, remember stick with what the pro told you.
Some times the new found form deserts you,but it will return.
If you have a sound method and practice you cannot fail to improve.
