Re: Help with the left shoulder

The following statements are particularly confusing because they seem to say any golf instruction is valid as long as you match the clubface angle to your swing path. Let's take the video that Jeff linked for me. One can turn one's bak to the target using his suggestions and matching the club face to the swing path is a matter of grip right? So anyone's instructions are valid if this is true.

"How you bring the club back in the backswing does not matter, peroid, as long as you can turn your shoulders or back to the target.

The downswing path means nothing as long as you match the clubface angle to the path you are using. Most of you want spend the time to study ball flight and it effects.

Now here is one thing I know is true. I have hit 325 yard drives using a variety of swings. I have swayed, dipped, lifted up, slid and danced in the back and through swing and hit the ball over 300 yards. In all cases I certainly made the necessary adjustments between the time I addressed the ball and ending with when I made contact with the ball so that the club face squared with the ball and I had enough leverage to power it down the fairway. The thing we lack in doing this every time is consitency in timing and the adjustments during the swing. We cannot get that consitency with a lot of moving body parts during the swing because we just can't mimic those movements time and again to a great degree. I used to be able to make the adjustments more easily when I was very young because I was also very athletic. But still I lacked a lot of consitency.

So most of these instructors are doing something right. They are at least setting a base for a consistent repeatable swing. So what are we really talking about here shootin and cmays that I don't quite get? What is this voodoo that you do so well?

Re: Help with the left shoulder

      cmays, explain:

      1. Grab your driver, grip it in your left hand if you are right handed down where the grip meets the shaft, grip does not matter as far as weak or strong and the club is off the ground.

Do you mean the club off the ground as in a normal address position? In other words you are not asking me to hold the club straight out in front of me right?

      2. Stand as straight and as tall as you can.

      got that

      3. W/o trying to bring the driver in with the hands, wrist and hand remain straight/flat, just allow the club straight back.

What do you mean "allow" the club straight back? You mean with a shoulder turn? just arms?

Re: Help with the left shoulder

I went to the range this weekend and was doing some drills to get to the right position at the top and have the shoulders turn properly. I did this drill with which most of you are probably familiar:

Get in your address position and hold a club against the front of your shoulders with your hands and with arms crosssed. Club should be parallel to the ground straight across the front of the shoulders. The hands push and hold the club against the shoulders. Have the clubhead pointing towards the front and the grip end to the rear of course. Now do a slow motion swing just turning the shoulders until for right handers the left shoulder is practically over the right foot. Then rotate back until the butt end of the club is pointing at the ball.

I can really feel the the pressure and weight transfer to the right leg/foot and a good stretch in the back when I get all the way rotated in the backswing. It seems a perfect feel for the top of the backswing. I tried then to see if I could get that feel in a regular swing but just couldn't. It is like something is letting go and not allowing me to coil. I realize since I have my arms stretched out with a club in my hands that I obviously change my moment of inertia. But shouldn't I be able to get that type of coil in a regular swing?

Re: Help with the left shoulder

well jam, take a baseball bat for example. If you turned untill the left shoudler was over the right foot what would happen? The momentum of the bat would keep going, wrap around your body, break your arm and the bat would smack you in the face.

take a swing for example. If you put a child in a swing do you push them all the way to the top? You push them untill their momentum will carry them the rest of the way, right?

In a golf swing, you do not need to power the club to the top untill your left shoulder is over the right foot. you turn back about 2/3 of the way and your momentum would carry the body, shoulders, club, and arms to the top. Just like in swinging a baseball bat back, and pushing a child in the swing. This also allows for the gradual deceleration of the turn when you get close to the top. You do not apply power from the start of the backswing untill the finish of the back swing. If you do so this will feel unatural and akward. You start the body back and when you get to a point that it will carry itself the rest of the way you stop applying power or force, let the momentum assist you. This is why golf is unatural, becausee we have a hard time letting ourselves be assisted by natural motions that we do in everday life

          hopefully something in there helps
          good luck

Repeat by bending from the hips and when you can lift the front arm up and the shaft is parallel to the body, you have found your hip bend.
            Thanks for the clarification.

Wow! you guys boggle the mind with all the mechanics, I wonder what your handicaps are and I especially wonder how you play under pressure.
I know this may offend some but lets get real here.
To say Harmon, Ledbetter, and others are not any good because"they don't understand how the body works" is just the height of arrogance and self grandizement.
There is so much B.S. on this site that it has become offensive.
