    Re: Driver woes!!

This is more of a ramble than advice.. Hehe

If it was me having the problem I would just ease up on the Driver.. Just say its on a months holiday - use it at the range a fair bit and just get comfortable with it.. (just to get rid of the ideas you're talking about, i.e. its the longest club with no loft - you should be thinking, I am gonna vaporise this one! - if you're reckless like me ) But seriously, remember that you have to hit it to a target.. That one cut of fairway however far out.. Don't just try and hit it straight! I'm a big believer in (for beginning golfers) if you hit a hook on the range your next shot should be a slice.. With turning that into on command fades and draws with some work.. If you can learn to say fade when you want, you double your landing area.. On a 25 yard wide fairway - if you aim down the middle you only have a margin of error 12 yards each way.. If you can start the ball out along the tree line and know its coming back, you have double the landing area to play with.. Same is true for aiming into greens.. Want to hit more GIR? Doubling the target area is a good place to start..

I think too that you shouldn’t look for instant results.. I mean that’s Golf, you start out say hitting a green with 10% of shots and over time that turns into missing a green with 10% of shots.. Your 15% of beautiful drives will turn into 90% and I think it will happen quickly because, it will sound stupid but, when I was younger and got to an alright standard I had trouble hitting my SW well compared to other clubs.. It was just a little quirk.. I would pick up the SW and look at the loft and think I had to swing it a certain way.. I just got rid of that by alternating shot for shot at the range between PW and SW.. Maybe it could work with 3W and Driver..

Not sure that my old lady would want me at full throttle in under 3 seconds but if we blokes lie about length then we can lie about speed too

              Re: Driver woes!!

              hi
i tent to find thet most player have problems because the try and power the ball with the driver. if you can get a player to swing the same as he does with a 9 iron or a 7 iron you tend to find the strike the ball cleaner and let the driver do the work and not try and bring in power from hips, legs and arms. if you watch any handicap player that hits a good driver most all play within themself's, ie dont play the driver at 100% more 80/90% power.
i know i play at 80/90% and i am not long about 260/275 yds but i do hit the fairways, when at the range i can hit 300yds but have no control, and some shots 50 yrs right when hit flat out.
i do think when we pull the driver from the bag we think power, and that is the first mistake, we should be thinking placement on the fairway.
i think the first fault with a driver is not swinging it but its in the mind and how we think we should play. i think this is same for player that use a 3 wood rather than a driver, they think more placement than power and get better results.

                    Re: Driver woes!!

                    Hi Shamed,

I have read your post, but not the responses you have got, so I hope I dont repeat any info you may have been given.

I have been working on my driver for some time now, and am dead happy with the results. On average straight and about 280 yds.

here are some tips as to what I have incorporated into my swing and setup.

                    1. Tee the ball about half a clubface higher.

2.place the clubface against the ball with the natural loft (i.e. clubface sitting on ground naturally)

                    3. Grip the club lightly, with the hands above the ball, not ahead.

                    4. With the weight concentrated on the soles of your feet, tilt the right shoulder .

                    5. Push the club away with the left shoulder and left hand. concentrating on a slow and smooth move.

                    6. At the top of the backswing, bump the left hip and drop the club down.

If you do all this correctly, you should see a great result. However, like any changes in a swing, give yourself time to get there

                    Regards,
                    Robert

                        Shamed,

Believe me, these are the correct basics for the driver. Persevere and you will definitely get there

well i know i have more drive than most...thats why i want to go to the range everyday..even when the temp is in the low 40s...which living in florida is a big deal

                            Re: Driver woes!!

Dont spend too much time on the range. There is a term called range rat which implies that a different mentality comes through on the range rather than the course. Go to the course and try the drills on your own for a few holes.

                                hello

I tell you what turned my driving around, and it is very simple, no thinking about mechanics what so ever, it is, "throw the club to a target in the fairway"

I have below some links that that talk about this and swing ideas very similar.

Briefly when I swing i take the club back in the best plane I can with my hands, I let my body follow my hands, I make no conscience body moves other than taking the club back with my hands

At the top of the backswing I do pause consciously just a bit, then I throw the club out to a target in the fairway. I do everything but let go of the club.

This has straightened out my drives tremendously and with good distance

throw the club links (search for the word "throw" on these articles)
