    hi all
any tips or drills for swinging through to a full finish with the longer clubs
can manage it no problem with 5i-sw but seem to be hitting at the ball rather than swinging through it with the longer clubs

    Re: swing followthrough

    Hey Slats...

Apart from some "subtle" differences, aren't your longer clubs pretty much the same as your shorter ones...???

If you have a clear image of your finishing position in mind and are happily getting there on the shorter sticks, then , is it just a mental thing, or a lack of confidence with your longer irons that is efecting your ability to get into theat nice finish position with the longer sticks...???

I know I have gotten into a good finishing position after a shot when a regular playing partner of mine will say "OK, we've finished taking pictures now"...

Guess what I'm trying to say here is so long as your basics (pre shot routine done, set up position ok, grip firm but loose) are right then regardless of which stick you have in hand, just go ahead and trigger your swing and get yourself into your finish position, forget whatever happens in between...

    Cheers

      Re: swing followthrough

      Hi Slats,

Create good arm extension in the follow through and get your hands high above your left shoulder with a straight right arm, momentum will take care of the rest. I like to recoil my arms back to the front at the end in a bouncing manner, this assists in maintaining a good quick swing action, if the arms have travelled slowly this action seems slow and sluggish instead of lively.

        Re: swing followthrough

I've been thinking a lot about the follow through and have come to the conclusion it has to be automatic. In the past, to get into a good follow through position I really had to think about it. But what I was doing was trying to guide the club to a follow through rather than it just happening as a result of everything else I did before impact. I think the momentum of your swing has to carry you to the follow through position. So, I think we have to go further back in the swing to find out what is inhibiting your momentum from carrying you through. Maybe I am all wet about this but is seems logically correct. It will take more momentum to get the longer clubs to swing free to the finish position because it requires more energy to swing those clubs. That is why your shorter clubs get through better and you see a drop off with the longer clubs. What is causing the rapid deceleration of your swing after impact or maybe going into impact?

Maybe some of you can shed some more light on this and give us more practical swing thoughts and adjustments regarding keeping the momentum in our swing needed for a propler follow through. I would definitely like to hear some more thoughts about this.

            Try this:
            1. Turn behind the ball and stay behind the ball at impact, I know it seems opposite of logic but it works along with:
            2. Coming into impact position and beyond, try to move your right knee towards the left. With the longer clubs you won't be able to have them touching but almost.
            3. Your finish should be around 10:30 to 11:00 on the clockface assuming the target is 12:00 oclock.
