Swinging Outside to in. Graphite V Steel shafts

Any ideas on how to correct an outside to inside swing plane. I end up coming accross the ball and loosing alot of distance and I also tend to hit the occasional shank.
Next question.. Graphite shaft versus steel shaft irons. I have a set of Tour Elite graphite shaft clubs. I have had them for the last 13 to 14 years. I find that when I am hitting a 6 iron most guys I am playing with are hitting 8 irons... Is there a reason for this??

You are probably leading your downswing with your right shoulder, this casts the club outside the swingpath creating that out to in swing. Work on dropping the arms down and getting your right elbow into your side while simultaneously sliding and unwinding your hips. Check out the "Pump it Drill" on this site.

Your lack of distance with irons may be due to the same problem, your OTT and casting will be a power leak.

spud, set up is the most important part of the golf swing, if that is bad enough you may not fix OTT no matter what you try

I went to the steel light shafts and had a problem hitting them then changed back to standard weight steel and immediatly got better results. my point, some people are too strong for graphite and it will cause swing issues,

Thanks Brian. Had a look at the video for that error and it sums up my swing. Practiced in the kitchen for a while last night trying to get the right swing plane. Will this help in distance?

Hi Spud,

If you are swinging over the top you will have a tendency to be casting the club, this releases the wrist hinge very early leaking head speed and power. If you keep the clubhead behind your hands in the downswing to waist high (Like in the pump it drill) then release the wrist hinge as you bring the clubhead from waist high down to the ball, you will create more speed in the final release that will give better distance, as long as the ball has been hit solidly.

I agree the pump drill is very good. Also, get an inside approach or make one, this is useful for ingraining and inside to outside swing path.
One more thing-it is very important that you turn behind the ball on backswing without swaying out over the right foot and most important of all--stay behind the ball at impact.
If you are casting, you are probably racing ahead of yourself; staying behind the ball will have you hitting the lower left hand quadrant of the ball and by all means keep your grip pressure light for all of this.
