Because I hope I am a gentleman, through gritted teeth, I must say "Well Done".

Damn it all, though, Slats as soon as I move into the 80's you break into the 70's - ah well I'll just have to follow you down.

      Robin

Oh btw I'm a "twatter" too - always like a twat or two

          Re: Twatting or Mechanics.

76 is still 76 and good golf at that Slats... Noice...

Once shot 76 on a par 62 course a few years back now and was happy to claim I'd broken 80.....

          Cheers

            Re: Twatting or Mechanics.

            Great Thread Brian,

Some great answers and makes you think, especially Greg with the never ending fix theroy...........

I am similar to Greg although I look at the game as never ending improvement, once I get one aspect nailed I then work on the next thing I do this every winter and spend at least 4/5 month perfecting my new addition..............

All that said I am still a Twatter, only I know the best way to twat it consistantly, it's no use twating it if it keeps going right for example, learn to twat it straight, then you can enjoy twating it........but you must always return to being a twatter once you learn something new, trust you instincs once they are engrained, then twat it.

            Deep I know.

What do the best players in the world do.........?????????

            Ian.

              Re: Twatting or Mechanics.

I think there has been some confusion on where the Twatting or Mechanics are used. I didn't mean to suggest these things were to be considered when playing the game, I guess most people twat on the fairways and greens, to me a mechanic here would be wrong.

I was more suggesting the method of learning and practicing golf. Now here I am mainly a mechanic and believe that the sound fundamentals should be part of the learning process. OK, people are different, tall, short, large framed, slight framed etc and they will need to adjust their golf swings accordingly.

There seems to be the other school that I will call "Twatters" its not technically correct but just a descriptive category, these people would suggest that the way to learn is by just picking up a club and hitting balls, adjusting for errors and eventually getting there. Some twatters suggest more with setup, balance etc but still suggest that it does not matter what you do in the swing as long as you bring the clubface back square at impact.

So we have it: learn by the Twat or learn by angles.

                Re: Twatting or Mechanics.

Then I think it has to be a case of both to get true results.

Learning angles is no use if you don't twat the ball hard even when learning as a true result would not be found.

I have many times being working on a swing though and "forgot" to hit the ball.

So I guess both are equally important in the learning process also.

                Cheers

                  Re: Twatting or Mechanics.

I sometimes play with a Twatter...He is a big, burly sort, he never reads about golf, never watches a tournament on the TV. He does not talk golf while playing. On the tee box he has a wide-open stance, has a reverse pivot and hits every club down the fairway...a long, low screaming fade..no more than five feet off the ground...irons or woods...it does not matter. He uses his putter from about 100 yards (sometimes further out) into the green (still using a reverse pivot). He has no wedges. He putts out of green-side bunkers. He scores in the low 80's. Go figure. This is one person you do not bet against. He is a true twatter.

                    Re: Twatting or Mechanics.

                    After clarification:

I start with angles while paying attention to feel.

I then look at the swing after a while to see if feel matches the new angle. If so, time to work on something else. If not, back to square one, and work to get the feel to match the angle.

                      "learn by angles"???

What does this mean? Is it a reference to something?

                        Re: Twatting or Mechanics.

Sorry, it's a term used by some as teaching by setting the planes and positions of the club through check points in the swing.

                          Re: Twatting or Mechanics.

                          Firstly, I've got a twat.

Secondly, I am quite the analytical type. I like to know how and why things work.

So I am a mechanics type who has a twat. Unusual breed

                              Imagine that. A naughty Aussie.

The best analogy I've heard in a while for those of us who like to know why things work in the golf swing:

"Do you have to be a mechanic to drive a car? No. You just press the pedals and turn the wheel. Therefore, you do not have to understand why the golf swing works. Just do what I tell you, and enjoy the results!"
